Perfume, savoury complexity and finely balanced structure define the Chatto Franklinii Pinot Noir 2025, a regional expression sourced from Tasmania’s cool Huon Valley. Produced by respected Pinot Noir specialist Jim Chatto, Franklinii forms part of the winery’s regional grower collection and sits between the delicacy of Bird and the darker profile of Chatto’s more powerful releases. The wine takes its name from Lagarostrobos franklinii, the ancient Huon pine found naturally in southern Tasmania. The 2025 vintage represents the third release of this particular regional series. Fruit was handpicked before fermentation, with approximately 10 days on skins and regular hand plunging used to extract colour, flavour and fine structural tannins.

The wine combines vibrant red and black berry fruit with a lively, spicy character and an underlying savoury dimension. Aromatically, pippy raspberry, wild strawberry and red plum sit above deeper red and dark cherry notes, accompanied by floral, herbal and exotic spice nuances. The palate is energetic and finely proportioned, possessing enough fruit concentration to give depth without sacrificing the freshness associated with Huon Valley Pinot Noir. Fine tannins provide gentle definition, while bright natural acidity maintains lift and balance. Layers of dried herbs, game, leaf litter and mineral detail introduce further complexity as the wine opens in the glass. Its fruit purity and measured structure make it approachable upon release, although the wine has the balance and persistence to develop additional savoury complexity with bottle age. The overall style is poised and expressive, combining red-fruited brightness with darker Pinot Noir flavours and a long, mineral-accented finish.

      Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is one of Australia’s most respected winemakers, a craftsman with over 25 years of experience and an unwavering devotion to Pinot Noir. A former Chief Winemaker for both McWilliam’s and Kreglinger/Pipers Brook, and a former Chair of Judges for the National Wine Show of Australia, Jim brings precision and purpose to every vintage.

His story began in Tasmania in the late 1990s, where he fell in love with the region’s cool-climate Pinot and the land that would later become home. Alongside his wife Daisy, Jim established Chatto Wines in pursuit of Pinot at its most expressive, wines that speak clearly of place, balance, and time. From their small vineyard in the Huon Valley, Jim crafts limited releases that have earned critical acclaim and a loyal following of collectors who understand his quiet pursuit of excellence.
