Classic Montalcino character, purity and structure define this compelling Tuscan Sangiovese from one of the region’s most respected family estates. The Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 2024 is produced primarily from younger vines within the estate’s prized Canalicchio and Montosoli crus, vineyards that also contribute to the estate’s acclaimed Brunello di Montalcino wines. First produced in 1975, this Rosso serves as the estate’s calling card, offering an accessible yet serious expression of its terroir and winemaking philosophy. Fermented in stainless steel and matured for approximately one year in a combination of Slavonian and French oak, the wine balances freshness with depth and complexity.

The 2024 vintage reflects the elegance of the growing season, delivering bright fruit, vibrant acidity and remarkable precision. Aromatically expressive and finely structured, it captures the essence of Sangiovese through its interplay of red fruits, spice and mineral nuances. The palate possesses both immediate charm and underlying seriousness, supported by refined tannins and energetic freshness. While approachable in its youth, the wine has the balance and concentration to develop gracefully over the coming years. It is an excellent companion to pasta with ragù, grilled meats, aged cheeses and traditional Tuscan cuisine.

The 2024 Rosso di Montalcino marries the vintage's elegance with the pure and complex house style. Crushed black cherries and cedary spices meet lifting nuances of mint and dusty rose as this evolves in the glass. It’s silken and dense, with a wave of ripe red berry fruits and vibrant acidity underscored by crisp minerality. There’s a weight to the 2024 that adds presence, even as it finishes incredibly fresh, with hints of tart raspberry and a saline resonance. This is a baby Brunello by every stretch of the imagination.

      Canalicchio di Sopra

Founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962, Canalicchio di Sopra has been a family-run estate for over six decades. In 1987, Primo was joined by his son-in-law Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, and since 2001, Pier Luigi's children—Francesco, Simonetta, and Marco—have taken the helm. The estate produces both Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino, drawing from the esteemed Canalicchio and Montosoli parcels on the northern side of Montalcino, which together total 19 hectares of vineyards.

The soils in the Canalicchio parcels are predominantly clay with pebbles and a strong mineral content, resulting in wines with aromatic intensity, opulence, and minerality. The Casaccia parcel is particularly notable for its extraordinary elegance, latent power, balance, and silky tannins, which often see it bottled separately. The Rosso di Montalcino is made from the estate's younger vineyards and represents the winery's calling card—a fresh, fruity, and versatile expression of Sangiovese. The first vintage was produced in 1975, when it was still referred to as "Red Wine from Brunello vines."
