Founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962, in 1987 Primo was joined by son-in-law Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, and since 2001, Canalicchio di Sopra has been in the highly capable hands of Pier Luigi’s children: Francesco, Simonetta and Marco.

The Rosso di Montalcino and the Brunello di Montalcino are based on the parcels of Canalicchio and Montosoli, on the northern side of Montalcino, and which combined total 19 hectares planted. All wines are aged in medium-sized Slavonian oak botti. The soils of the Canalicchio parcels are largely clay with pebbles and a strong mineral content, resulting in wines of aromatic intensity, opulence and minerality. It is the extraordinary elegance, latent power, balance and silky tannins of the Casaccia parcel which sees it bottled separately.

Produced mostly from the wineries youngest vineyards, it represents their calling card for Canalicchio di Sopra wines: a young, fruity, and versatile expression of their Sangiovese. The first vintage was produced in 1975 when it was still called Red Wine from Brunello vines.

The Rosso di Montalcino Doc 2020 vintage from Canalicchio di Sopra is the freshest and most vibrant version of their Sangiovese in a year of extreme depth and vibration. The 2020 vintage was characterized by the achievement of excellent technological maturation that enhanced the floreality of their Sangiovese, guaranteeing the wines excellent acidity to support the structure. In this context, the Rosso di Montalcino in this vintage is expressed in all its vivacity, freshness and aromatic complexity with a great balsamic impact. In the mouth, the wine is deeply stretched with sweetness contrasted with good salinity: characteristics that make the Rosso di Montalcino Doc 2020 a wine of great gastronomy, capable of accompanying food in a very versatile way.
