Elegance, depth and remarkable vineyard expression define this outstanding Brunello from one of Montalcino’s most respected family estates. The Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is crafted entirely from Sangiovese sourced from the estate’s historic vineyards located in the prized Canalicchio and Montosoli zones on the northern side of Montalcino. These elevated sites are renowned for producing Brunello wines of exceptional finesse, aromatic complexity and longevity. The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as one of the strongest in recent years, combining concentration with freshness and precision.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel before extended maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, preserving the purity of fruit while allowing structure and complexity to develop. The wine displays a harmonious balance of ripe red fruits, floral nuances, earthy undertones and savoury mineral character. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity provide both immediate appeal and considerable ageing potential. True to the Canalicchio di Sopra style, the 2021 emphasizes elegance over power, allowing terroir and varietal character to take centre stage. While approachable with decanting, this Brunello possesses the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over the next two decades or more. It is a superb match for roasted meats, game dishes, aged cheeses and refined Tuscan cuisine.

The classic 2021 Brunello from Canalicchio di Sopra entices with its fragrance of lavender, eucalyptus, dark spice and red plum. Delicious and loaded with finesse, the smooth palate offers strawberry compote, red cherry, licorice and crushed mint accompanied by taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity and a hint of orange zest elevate the finish.
The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino shows the precision and balance that make this vintage so compelling. The nose has notes of cherry cordial, anise, roses, thyme, brushy herbs, and warm spice. Medium-bodied, it stays weightless on the palate, with ripe tannins, bright acidity, and a long finish that turns slightly savoury with black tea. It’s a fabulous Brunello that will only improve over the next decade.
Aromas of red cherries, pepper, meat and a hint of dark olives. Medium- to full-bodied, showing subtle fleshiness and precise tannins that bring focus and definition. There’s an ethereal quality, with pure, transparent red fruit and a clean, graceful finish. So approachable. Drink or hold.
Founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962, Canalicchio di Sopra has been a family-run estate for over six decades. In 1987, Primo was joined by his son-in-law Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, and since 2001, Pier Luigi's children—Francesco, Simonetta, and Marco—have taken the helm. The estate produces both Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino, drawing from the esteemed Canalicchio and Montosoli parcels on the northern side of Montalcino, which together total 19 hectares of vineyards.
The soils in the Canalicchio parcels are predominantly clay with pebbles and a strong mineral content, resulting in wines with aromatic intensity, opulence, and minerality. The Casaccia parcel is particularly notable for its extraordinary elegance, latent power, balance, and silky tannins, which often see it bottled separately. The Rosso di Montalcino is made from the estate's younger vineyards and represents the winery's calling card—a fresh, fruity, and versatile expression of Sangiovese. The first vintage was produced in 1975, when it was still referred to as "Red Wine from Brunello vines."

For over 50 years, Canalicchio di Sopra has pursued the quest for elegance, which lies at the core of their winemaking philosophy. From cultivating their own Cru vineyards to choosing unique microclimates that naturally limit grape yields, every step is taken with care and precision to highlight the distinctive characteristics of their terroir.
The estate focuses solely on Sangiovese, embracing the grape’s ability to express the unique traits of their Canalicchio and Montosoli vineyards. By working closely with these differences in terrain, exposure, and microclimates, Canalicchio di Sopra has built a strong identity, defined by their classical yet distinct wines. Their 19 hectares of vineyards yield wines that are elegant, powerful, mineral-rich, and refreshing, with notable acidity and purity—a true reflection of the land, climate, and people who shape them.
