Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 2023 is a vibrant and finely tuned expression of Central Otago, crafted from a blend of estate vineyards including Burn Cottage in Lowburn and select parcels in Bannockburn. Produced under certified organic and biodynamic practices, the wine reflects a deep commitment to site expression and minimal intervention winemaking. The 2023 vintage captures the clarity and energy of a cooler growing season, allowing for lifted aromatics, refined structure and beautifully defined fruit. Fermentation includes a portion of whole clusters, contributing subtle spice and structural complexity, while careful élevage in French oak ensures balance without overshadowing the fruit.

In the glass, the wine reveals a bright and expressive profile, combining red and dark fruit with savoury and mineral nuances. There is a natural tension between freshness and depth, giving the wine both immediacy and poise. The interplay of vineyard sources brings together richness and vibrancy, resulting in a layered yet approachable style. This cuvée is often considered the most accessible introduction to Burn Cottage, yet it consistently delivers impressive complexity and finesse. With its balance, purity and quiet sophistication, it stands as a benchmark for modern New Zealand Pinot Noir.

      Trusted by the professionals

“Bright and lifted aromas of strawberries, wild raspberries, citrus peel and cherries on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannins giving notes of blackberries, mocha, lead pencil and wet bark. Refined and pure with 20% whole-cluster.”

      — James Suckling, 96 points

“Elegant, plush and lush, with fresh flavors of black cherry, raspberry preserves and lingonberry jam. Herbal accents of dried thyme, sage and matcha, along with whiffs of white pepper and crushed pine needle, linger on the long, expressive finish.”

      — Wine Spectator, 95 points

“The 2023 Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is stalky, spicy and bright, with note of Campari/blood orange that mingle alongside dark chocolate, coffee, blood plum and star anise. If anything, this feels slightly lean rather than plush, but it works well within the scope of the wine. In the mouth, the tannins and acidity work together as one, making this wine feel integrated, serious, and fun, all at once. Recommended. It is very fine. 13.5% alcohol.”

      — Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate, 92 points

      Burn Cottage

Marquis Savage, a Chicago wine importer, discovered the enchanting allure of Central Otago during what was intended to be a brief tour of the region. Captivated by its unique charm and potential, he seized the opportunity to acquire 24 hectares in the Cromwell basin. These vineyards were meticulously planted with clones tailored to the specific soil types, all while adhering to biodynamic principles.

To ensure the success of this venture, Savage enlisted the expertise of Ted Lemon from Littorai, a seasoned veteran with over three decades of experience in terroir-driven winegrowing, spanning Burgundy, California, and Oregon. This collaboration laid a strong foundation for the vineyards.

At the helm of winemaking is Claire Mullholland, a born-and-bred talent of Central Otago. Previously associated with Martinborough Vineyards and Amisfield, Claire has a keen ability to unlock the bright, lively, and profound potential of these vineyards year after year. Her journey began after university, where she honed her skills in the pioneering vineyards of the region, including Rippon, Chard Farm, and Gibbston Valley. Claire’s international experience further enriched her winemaking prowess, as she ventured abroad to deepen her understanding of Pinot Noir in renowned locations such as Australia, Oregon, and Burgundy. Notably, she worked at prestigious estates like Domaine De L’Arlot and Domaine Dujac in Burgundy’s Cote de Nuit. Her significant contributions to New Zealand wine include leadership roles as head winemaker at Martinborough Vineyard and Amisfield, before she joined Burn Cottage Vineyard.
