Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Haut Jarrons 2019
The vines here are owned by one of Leroux’s close friends and are sited in the heart of the 1er Cru on the east-facing, Beaune side of Savigny. This is the area from where the most elegant Savigny wines tend to derive—and this vintage is typically in that vein. Like most of the terrain in the Côte d’Or, the soils here are clay/ limestone, but the clay here is light and sandy. So, although there’s more flesh here than in the villages cuvée—as you might expect—there is also greater finesse, with waves of wild strawberry and crushed cherry fruit as well as violet notes and an intense, minerally, earthy lick to close. The 2019 was fermented with only a pinch of whole-bunches. It’s an excellent value 1er Cru that will drink well from the get-go, yet it will benefit from three to six years further aging.
Fresh mid purple, a lightish style of Savigny, but fine and precise. Very nicely balanced sitting with its oak in harmony, fresh red fruit with a gracious feel. - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
