Purity, restraint and site-driven clarity define this finely tuned Tasmanian Pinot Noir from one of the state’s most distinctive cool-climate locations. The 2024 Apsley Gorge Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards set within the dramatic Apsley Gorge landscape of Tasmania’s East Coast, where maritime influence and ancient soils shape wines of precision and quiet power.

The cool growing season of 2024 encouraged slow, even ripening, allowing flavour development to build without sacrificing natural acidity. In the glass, the wine is poised and detailed rather than overtly rich, emphasising line and finesse over weight. Red fruit character sits at the core, framed by subtle savoury and mineral elements that speak clearly of place. Gentle extraction and sensitive oak use preserve aromatic lift and textural refinement.

The palate shows tension and balance, with fine tannins lending structure without hardness. This is a Pinot Noir built on elegance and transparency, offering early drinkability while holding the shape and composure to reward short- to mid-term cellaring.

      Apsley Gorge

Brian Franklin, the owner and winemaker of Apsley Gorge, brings a wealth of experience to the craft of winemaking. After initially training under Philippe Charlopin, one of Burgundy’s most respected winemakers, Brian’s winemaking journey led him to the Apsley Valley. His expertise in the French tradition of winemaking, combined with his nearly 40 years of experience in both France and Australia, has shaped the wines of Apsley Gorge into one of Tasmania’s finest examples of cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Brian’s hands-on approach, from viticulture to fermentation, ensures that every bottle expresses the unique character of the land.

Apsley Gorge is a testament to Brian’s commitment to producing exceptional wines with great purity and structure. The vineyard’s location, near the entrance to the Apsley Gorge National Park, enjoys cooling afternoon breezes, which moderate the climate and promote long, slow ripening. With a focus on natural winemaking techniques and minimal intervention, Brian produces wines that are as individual as the site they come from, with each vintage representing a new opportunity to showcase the potential of the land.

      Tasting notes

      NOSE
      Fragrant and pure

Aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry and cranberry layered with dried rose, forest floor, subtle spice and a faint mineral undertone.

      PALATE
      Fine and composed

Bright red fruits glide across a silky, medium-bodied palate, supported by taut acidity, savoury nuance and finely woven tannins that provide shape and persistence.

      FINISH
      Clean and mineral

A long, refined finish marked by freshness, gentle savoury grip and lingering red-fruited clarity.
