Massolino Vigna Rionda has been making wine in Serralunga d'Alba since 1896, when Giovanni Massolino founded the family estate in the heart of the Langhe.
More than a century later, the third and fourth generations remain at the helm. Their approach is grounded in the vineyards and deliberately restrained in the cellar, with minimal intervention used to preserve the character of variety, vintage and place.
Barolo remains central to Massolino, particularly through its historic connection to Vigna Rionda, but the estate's range now provides a much broader view of Piedmont, spanning Barbaresco, Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba and Moscato d'Asti.
Serralunga d'Alba
Massolino's home is Serralunga d'Alba, one of Barolo's historic communes and the place around which the estate's identity has developed since 1896.
The family has long believed that great wine begins with an understanding of individual sites. Rather than treating vineyard simply as soil and climate, Massolino considers exposure, altitude, ridge, season and the accumulated experience of working each parcel.
That philosophy becomes particularly clear through the estate's collection of Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive, or MGA, where individual vineyards provide distinct expressions of Nebbiolo and the wider Langhe landscape.
Massolino Barolo
The classic Massolino Barolo sits at the centre of the range, providing a broader expression of the estate's Serralunga roots and its approach to Nebbiolo.
Alongside current releases, our collection extends across multiple vintages and formats, including selected 1.5L magnums, offering the opportunity to follow both vintage variation and the development of Massolino Barolo with age.
From there, the estate's individual MGA wines bring the focus progressively closer to specific vineyards.
Vigna Rionda
Vigna Rionda is inseparable from the Massolino story.
Located in Serralunga d'Alba, it is one of the area's most sought-after crus and the vineyard from which the estate takes its full name, Massolino Vigna Rionda.
For Massolino, Vigna Rionda represents one of the clearest expressions of Serralunga Nebbiolo. Its fruit is reserved for Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva, a wine given extended ageing before release and produced as one of the estate's defining bottlings.
Our collection includes multiple vintages of Vigna Rionda Riserva alongside the exceptionally limited Etichetta Nera, or Black Label, releases.
Margheria, Parafada & Parussi
Beyond Vigna Rionda, Massolino works with several important Barolo MGAs, allowing the differences between individual sites to come into focus.
Margheria lies in Serralunga d'Alba at around 280 metres above sea level. Massolino works approximately 1.5 hectares here, producing a site-specific Barolo alongside selected magnum releases.
Also in Serralunga, Parafada benefits from a southerly exposure and a naturally sheltered position on the ridge, providing another distinct interpretation of Nebbiolo from the commune.
Parussi takes Massolino beyond Serralunga to Castiglione Falletto, introducing the character of a different Barolo commune while retaining the estate's restrained approach to vineyard and cellar.
Together, the crus make it possible to explore Barolo not simply by producer or vintage, but by place.
Massolino Barbaresco & Albesani
Massolino's work with Nebbiolo now extends beyond Barolo into Barbaresco.
The estate produces a classic Barbaresco alongside a vineyard-specific expression from Albesani, an MGA in the commune of Neive at the heart of the Barbaresco production zone.
These wines broaden the Massolino collection considerably, offering a comparison between Nebbiolo grown across two of Piedmont's great denominations while maintaining a consistent producer philosophy.
Beyond Barolo & Barbaresco
Massolino's range extends through several of the traditional wines of the Langhe.
Langhe Nebbiolo offers another expression of the variety at the centre of Barolo and Barbaresco, with our collection spanning several vintages and formats.
Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba represent two other longstanding Piedmontese varieties, while Moscato d'Asti provides a lighter, aromatic and gently sparkling counterpoint to the estate's structured reds.
Together, they place Massolino's cru wines within the broader wine culture of the Langhe rather than treating Barolo in isolation.
A Family Estate Since 1896
Massolino remains a family estate more than 125 years after its foundation.
Across four generations, the philosophy has remained centred on the relationship between vineyard and wine. Meticulous work in the vines is followed by an intentionally essential approach in the cellar, allowing the qualities of the grape, site and growing season to remain visible.
It is an approach particularly suited to Nebbiolo, where differences between neighbouring vineyards can become increasingly apparent with time in bottle.
