Founded in 2005, Catalina Sounds began with a clear ambition: to make wines that speak distinctly of Marlborough while bringing greater texture, shape and detail to the region’s familiar styles.
Named for the Catalina flying boats once seen across the South Pacific and the Marlborough Sounds nearby, the producer has built its reputation around Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, while progressively expanding into Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Fruit is sourced across Marlborough’s Wairau, Southern and Awatere Valleys, with Catalina Sounds also producing wines from its own Sound of White Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley.
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Sound of White Vineyard
The estate Sound of White Vineyard sits in the Waihopai Valley within Marlborough’s Southern Valleys sub-region.
First planted in 2005 and elevated around 200 metres above sea level, the vineyard now has 31.6 hectares under vine, planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Its elevated position, distinct microclimate and soil profile give Catalina Sounds the opportunity to produce wines with a more specific sense of place, defined by clear acidity, structure and depth.
Marlborough, Site by Site
Catalina Sounds works across Marlborough’s principal sub-regions, each contributing something different.
The Wairau Valley is characterised by free-draining alluvial soils, while the Southern Valleys bring a greater presence of clay-rich loams. Further south, the Awatere Valley introduces stony silt loams and a cooler, more exposed growing environment.
This mix of sites allows Catalina Sounds to build wines with both regional identity and greater nuance between varieties and vineyards.
