At the northern end of the Isle of Arran, Lochranza Distillery has been producing Arran Single Malt since 1995. The distillery draws water from Loch na Davie in the hills above Lochranza, producing a spirit known for its clean, fruit-led character and versatility in maturation.
Arran's range gives that house style considerable room to move. There are classic age statements from 10 to 25 years old, alongside sherry and quarter-cask maturation, Port and Sauternes cask finishes, limited older releases and the distinctly smoky Machrie Moor.
Lochranza Distillery
Arran's modern whisky story began in the early 1990s, when Lochranza was selected as the site for a new distillery at the northern end of the island.
Construction began in 1994 and the first spirit ran from the stills on 29 June 1995, returning legal whisky production to Arran after an absence of more than 160 years.
The location was chosen in part for its access to Loch na Davie, with water travelling from the surrounding hills to the distillery via the Easan Biorach burn. Combined with Arran's coastal setting and relatively mild island microclimate, it forms an important part of the distillery's sense of place.
The Arran House Style
Arran Single Malt begins with malted barley and Loch na Davie water before fermentation and double distillation in copper pot stills.
The resulting spirit has a naturally bright, clean and fruit-driven profile, providing a versatile base for both long maturation and more expressive cask treatments.
Arran generally bottles its single malts without added colouring and avoids chill filtration for malts bottled above 43% ABV, preserving the natural colour, texture and character developed during maturation.
Arran 10, 14, 18, 21 & 25 Year Old
The age-statement range provides a natural way to follow the development of Arran Single Malt over time.
Arran 10 Year Old sits at the heart of the range and has been an important house expression since its first commercial release in 2006. From there, the collection moves through 14, 18 and 21 Year Old releases to Arran 25 Year Old, showing increasing maturity and the influence of extended time in oak.
For collectors and established Arran drinkers, the range also includes older and limited bottlings from the Explorer Series, including 21 and 23 Year Old releases.
Cask Strength & Cask Finishes
Arran's fruit-led spirit lends itself particularly well to different styles of oak and secondary maturation.
Arran Sherry Cask 'The Bodega' places sherry maturation at the centre, while Quarter Cask 'The Bothy' uses smaller casks to increase the interaction between spirit and oak. Both are presented at cask strength.
The collection also includes Sauternes and Port Cask Finish expressions, bringing the character of former wine casks into the Arran house style and offering a different perspective from the traditional age-statement range.
Machrie Moor & Peated Arran
While Lochranza is now associated principally with unpeated Arran Single Malt, peat has an important place in the distillery's recent history.
Machrie Moor was first released in 2010 as Arran's peated expression, named after the peat bog and ancient stone circles on the island's west coast.
Its combination of Arran's fruit-led spirit with peat smoke created a markedly different expression of the distillery and helped lay the foundations for what would eventually become Lagg Distillery in the south of the island.
Our range includes Arran Machrie Moor Cask Strength, offering the style at greater concentration and intensity.
One Island, Two Distilleries
The opening of Lagg Distillery in 2019 created a clearer distinction between the two sides of whisky production on Arran.
Today, Lochranza in the north is home to the predominantly unpeated Arran Single Malt style, while Lagg in the south focuses on heavily peated single malt.
Together they provide two contrasting interpretations of whisky from the same island, with Arran's earlier Machrie Moor releases providing an important link between them.
