Yangarra is an exceptional single-vineyard estate located in the esteemed Blewitt Springs subregion, situated at the northern edge of the McLaren Vale region in South Australia. The vineyard's unique combination of ancient geology, high altitude, and Mediterranean climate provides the perfect environment for cultivating the finest grape varieties of the southern Rhône. The estate's dedication to sustainable farming practices, including organic and biodynamic farming, ensures that the fruit is of the highest quality and truly reflects the terroir. The resulting wines are complex, elegant and expressive, showcasing the unique characteristics of the vineyard. Yangarra's commitment to producing exceptional wines solely from its single-vineyard estate has earned it a reputation as one of Australia's premier wineries. With a focus on Grenache and other Rhône varieties, the winery is dedicated to producing wines that are a true expression of the terroir. The wines are crafted with minimal intervention, allowing the fruit to shine through and speak for itself.
The Yangarra Grenache Rosé is a beautifully crafted wine that captures the essence of early-season Grenache. Hand-picked early in the season to capture the pink lady apple crunchiness of the skins and vibrant natural acidity, the grapes were gently pressed to produce a very pale, elegant and dry style of Rosé. The Grenache displays delicate rose hip and strawberry aromas with a juicy, crisp palate, making it the perfect wine for summer sipping. The grapes were gently basket pressed using whole bunches, just as if making a white wine, for minimal colour extraction. A small percentage of Saignée (drained off juice) was used in the blend to add some depth of flavour without overwhelming the finesse that the winery is striving for. The wine underwent cool fermentation, followed by maturation in tank on lees, stirred for 4 months before being bottled in August 2022. In the glass, the Yangarra Grenache Rosé is a pale pink colour, with aromas of delicate rose hip and fresh strawberries. On the palate, the wine is light-bodied, with flavours of crisp red apple, white peach and a hint of minerality. The wine's vibrant natural acidity provides a refreshing finish that is perfect for warm summer days.
A come-hither colour and classically dry, but there’s a succulent sweetness to the fruit flavours, allied with a textural pliancy. The acidity offers freshness but is also soft enough for that texture to play out. Poached strawberry, watermelon, white cherry, rosehip, musk and freshly ground cinnamon, all elegantly reflected. There’s clearly a lot of thought to the flavour and shape, but you’d be forgiven for focusing on the deliciousness. - Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion, 95 Points.
