Product Description:
Soave at its source—pure Garganega from volcanic hills.
Suavia’s 2023 Soave Classico captures the essence of its origin: volcanic soils, hillside vineyards, and the Tessari family's steadfast pursuit of quality. Made exclusively from Garganega, this wine reflects both the depth of the Soave Classico zone and Suavia’s modern, terroir-driven approach. Now run by three sisters—Meri, Valentina, and Alessandra—the estate continues to set the benchmark for what Soave can be: vibrant, textural, and full of character.
This vintage is precise and mineral, with a straw yellow hue and green reflections. On the nose, it opens with delicate white flowers and orchard fruit, laced with subtle vegetal and flinty notes. The palate is clean and juicy, with a salty snap that brings freshness and drive to its soft, rounded core. It’s a wine that balances accessibility with quiet complexity, making it equally suited to aperitivo hour or the dinner table.
Drink young to enjoy its brightness, or give it a couple of years to reveal more savoury detail. Pair with grilled prawns, fresh goat cheese or spring vegetable pasta.
Maker
At Suavia Wines, the commitment to crafting exceptional wines is rooted in a deep respect for the land. The family’s philosophy revolves around sustainable vineyard management, where the soil is the true protagonist. They believe that the work done in the vineyard extends far beyond the wellbeing of the vines—it is about nurturing the entire landscape. This holistic approach, which has been carried out for generations, led Suavia to embrace organic farming, officially certified in 2019. Their dedication to non-invasive winemaking in the cellar mirrors this, with the focus on gently transforming grapes into wine, fully respecting the natural process and ensuring the preservation of both the vines and the environment.
Suavia’s research-driven approach to winemaking has led them to collaborate with Italian universities and experts, delving into agronomic, ampelographic, and geological studies. One of their landmark projects has been the conservation of Trebbiano di Soave, a historic variety rediscovered through their efforts and brought to life with the creation of Massifitti wine. This ongoing quest for discovery and innovation continues to shape their wines, allowing them to look at their territory and winemaking traditions with fresh eyes while preserving the authenticity of the land.
The Vineyard
Suavia's 30 hectares of vineyards are located in the heart of the Soave Classico region, within the volcanic hills that rise up to 340 meters. This high-altitude location benefits from a cooler microclimate and a wide diurnal temperature range, which, alongside excellent sunlight exposure, helps to create optimal conditions for grape growing. The volcanic soils, originating from ancient Eocene-era volcanic activity, provide a unique mineral composition rich in iron, magnesium, and manganese. These soils, combined with centuries of careful viticulture, create a balanced environment where the vines thrive and interact with the land in a dynamic, ongoing relationship.
The vineyards exclusively grow the two native white grape varieties of the region: Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. Garganega, a variety with deep roots in the area dating back to the 11th century, flourishes in the hilly terrains of Soave, producing wines with delicate refinement and firm minerality. Trebbiano di Soave, once in danger of being lost, has been revived through Suavia's collaboration with the University of Milan and now thrives in the vineyard once again. This ancient grape variety, known for its high acidity and sapidity, is a key element in Suavia’s dedication to preserving the region’s winemaking heritage. Together, these native varieties tell the story of the land’s rich history and unique terroir, creating wines that are both a testament to tradition and a reflection of Suavia’s innovative spirit.
