Pommery Grand Cru Brut Millésime 2004 1.5L
In 1858, Madame Pommery took over as head of Pommery & Greno after the death of her husband. She based the expansion of her House on the creation of wines unlike any others, with one constant demand: quality pushed to the extreme. In matters of taste she was ahead of her time. It was she who created Pommery Nature in 1874, the first brut champagne to meet with commercial success, thereby breaking with the tradition of very sweet wine. A woman in a man’s world, she imprinted her personality on her champagnes.
Only fruit from seven Grand Cru vineyards is utilised in the fermentation, ageing, and release of this magnum-sized mix of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which spends more than 4 years ageing on lees and another 6 months after disgorgement. Up until the Cellar Master determines that the wine is ready for release, moderate ageing continues. It exhibits a plethora of citrous, white, and red fruits, all connected by a minerality that results in a mature complexity, elegance, and longevity.
A fruity style, full of soft grapefruit, touches of citrus and apple. Under the fruit, there is a more yeasty character, adding richness. It could well be even better if aged for several years. - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast
