Krug is one of Champagne's most prestigious houses and collectible in Champagne. The house was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, in his native home of Mosel part of Germany at that time. Joseph Krug moved to France and spent some time working for Jacquesson, the leading Champagne house of the time. Krug's philosophy was that every Champagne should be the best possible expression, and eschewed the common idea of a hierarchy of Champagne. Instead, he began to craft a premium wine from a reserve of wines vinified separately by the growers themselves, a wine that would eventually become the Grande Cuvée.
Krug sits alongside the likes of Dom Pérignon and Cristal at the top of the Champagne tree, and is a blend of 120 different wines from 10 or more vintages from the so-called Krug Library (a repository of still wines held prior to blending and refermenting in bottle). It is aged for six years, and is noted for its complex brioche and spice characters.
Today, the wines are still vinified by individual plot, and are stored in the Krug Library. Every year, the chef de cave heads a tasting committee which decides on the final blend. This library holds reserve wines anywhere from the current vintage to those 50 years old and are produced from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, which are all grown at Krug and used throughout the collection. Krug also makes several other Champagnes, including a rosé non-vintage and a Krug vintage, which is only produced in the best years.
Krug sources grapes from a network of growers across the Champagne region, meticulously selecting only the finest fruit. The house's philosophy is to treat each plot of land as a distinct terroir, allowing them to create a diverse range of wines that contribute to the complexity of Krug Grande Cuvée. The blend for each edition is a testament to the house's deep understanding of the region and its ability to craft a champagne that transcends the limitations of a single vintage.
Expect aromas of flowers in bloom, ripe, dried and citrus fruit, as well as marzipan and gingerbread.
On the palate, there are flavours of hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar, jellied and citrus fruit, almonds, brioche and honey. The creamy texture and vibrant acidity create a luxurious and refreshing experience.
The finish is long and complex, with flavours of brioche, citrus, and a hint of toasted almond lingering on the palate. A subtle salinity adds a refreshing counterpoint, creating a satisfying and enduring aftertaste.

Maker
Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, the House of Krug is one of Champagne's most prestigious and revered producers. With a background steeped in the expertise of both German and French wine traditions, Joseph Krug's philosophy was groundbreaking in the world of Champagne. Rejecting the notion of vintage hierarchy, he sought to create a Champagne that was the very best each year, regardless of the vintage. His vision led to the creation of Krug Grande Cuvée, a blend of select wines aged in oak casks and carefully blended for an unmatched level of quality. Today, Krug continues to uphold its legacy of producing collectible and sought-after Champagne that exemplifies craftsmanship, artistry, and innovation.
Vineyard
Krug Grande Cuvée is the product of a remarkable blending process that involves over 120 different plots across Champagne’s prestigious vineyards. With no single vintage defining the Champagne, it’s the blend of wines from more than 10 different years that gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unparalleled complexity. The vineyard’s terroir, along with meticulous care in the vinification process, ensures that only the best grapes are selected for Krug Grande Cuvée. The wine undergoes a seven-year aging process in Krug’s cellars, where it develops its signature elegance and complexity. As the years pass, the character of the Champagne deepens and becomes more accentuated, offering a dynamic and evolving experience that can be enjoyed now or in the future.
