A benchmark Volnay—silken, structured, and deeply rooted in place. From a commanding 3.98-hectare parcel, Domaine Marquis d’Angerville’s 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is a wine that speaks clearly and confidently of its origin. Champans has long been seen as the archetype of Volnay—where elegance meets flesh—and this release shows why. It opens with red and black forest fruits, floral lift and savoury spice, and unfurls slowly to reveal understated depth and tension.
This vineyard sits on richer, more clay-dominant soils than Taillepieds, giving the wine a rounder, more supple texture without losing its mineral backbone. D’Angerville’s hallmark restraint is in full effect: no over-extraction, moderate new oak (around 20%), and all the power channelled into purity and poise.
Decant if drinking early or cellar to 2040+. Superb with duck confit, mushroom ragoût or simply a good roast chook.

A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose... The precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavors also exude evident minerality... this is outstanding.
The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is finely tuned on the nose... medium-bodied with fine tannins, lending this a satin-like texture... depth here is cunningly disguised and will only emerge once given adequate bottle maturity.
Enticingly rustic on the nose with red and black forest berries, fireplace embers and a hint of game... This has more flesh on the bones than some of the other Volnay Premier Crus.
From a huge 3.98 ha parcel... a restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose... precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavours... this is outstanding.
The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru... finely tuned on the nose... medium-bodied with fine tannins... lightly spiced with a slightly more tertiary finish... the depth here is cunningly disguised.
This monumental wine is, as always, a reference for the appellation... lovely density of plum and blackberry... plump, velvety and long... should continue to improve for at least 30 years.
