Jean-Louis Trapet, a distinguished member of the top 10 vignerons in the Côte de Nuits, upholds his great-grandfather's legacy, established in 1870, overseeing a 15-hectare vineyard around Gevrey. Together with his wife Andrée, they also manage a 6-hectare estate in Alsace near Riquewihr. Committed to biodynamic winemaking, Jean-Louis adopts a non-interventionist approach, allowing his wines to undergo extended aging. Some cuvées are whole cluster-fermented to emphasize fruit aromas, while others are crafted to showcase the complexity of the renowned climats. In his own words, "Wine is one of the most refined aspects of human civilization." Their sons, Pierre and Louis, have embraced the family tradition, producing exceptional wines under their own label. Since 1995, the entire domain has embraced biodynamics, respecting the natural balance of the wine through gentle practices in the vineyard and cellar, emphasizing observation to protect the vines and monitor their growth. The maturation process at the Trapet domain is deliberate, with minimal intervention in vinification and slow, natural aging in barrels over winter months.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea from Trapet comes from four parcels, one of which has the oldest vines in the domain, each chosen for their terroir's characteristics. This blend has a unique geological and climatic identity which produces a dense wine.

The Domaine Jean Louis Trapet Gevrey Chambertin Ostrea 2021 is a fine medium deep purple wine that begins with a quiet nose, but becomes exquisite after a minute or two. It is fully ripe yet impeccably balanced, with iron-rich soil showing in a slight blood orange note on the palate, good acidity and a very stylish profile. The wine is showcasing a lovely bouquet of sweet dark berries, black plums, sweet stem tones, bitter chocolate, dark soil tones, woodsmoke and a hint of oak. It is pure, full-bodied and complex, with good soil signature and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, elegant finish. The wine also offers aromas of cherries, raspberries, sweet spices and liquorice, unwinding in the glass to reveal a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered profile with an ample core of fruit underpinned by powdery tannins. The finely-tuned nose presents transparent red fruit and touches of shucked oyster shells, with the palate delivering raspberry coulis and blood orange notes, finely balanced with a slightly grainy, quite persistent finish.

Just made from Clos now. A fine medium deep purple. The nose begins quietly but becomes exquisite with just a minute or two. Fully ripe yet impeccably balanced. Iron rich soil shows in a slight blood orange note on the palate, good acidity, very stylish. Drink from 2026-2031- Jasper Morris.

The old vine Ostrea bottling of Gevrey AC is also excellent in 2021, with just a touch more inherent elegance and refinement than the straight villages. The lovely bouquet delivers a classic blend of sweet dark berries, black plums, a nice touch of sweet stem tones, bitter chocolate, dark soil tones, woodsmoke and just a hint of oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and shows off lovely depth at the core, with good soil signature and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and elegant finish. Lovely wine. (Drink between 2028-2065) - John Gilman.
