Prestige cuvées sit at the highest level of a Champagne producer's range, representing a particular vision of house style, vineyard selection and winemaking.
The category is remarkably varied. Some are produced from a single vintage, others bring together multiple harvests. Some focus on Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, while others rely on carefully constructed blends. What connects them is their position as a producer's flagship expression, often accompanied by rigorous selection and extended ageing before release.
What Defines a Prestige Cuvée?
Unlike classifications such as Vintage, Blanc de Blancs or Rosé, Prestige Cuvée is not a legally defined Champagne category. Instead, the term generally refers to a producer's most important or ambitious wine.
Fruit & Vineyard Selection
Many prestige cuvées draw on highly regarded vineyards and carefully selected parcels, including Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites. The precise approach varies considerably between producers and is often fundamental to the identity of the wine.
Extended Ageing
Longer ageing is common, particularly for vintage prestige cuvées. Extended time on lees can build texture and complexity while retaining the acidity and structure associated with long-lived Champagne.
Individual House Style
Perhaps most importantly, prestige cuvées are not made to a single formula. Each producer determines what its flagship wine should represent, which is why the category encompasses such different expressions.

House Flagships
Many of Champagne's best-known prestige cuvées are vintage wines.
Dom Pérignon is produced exclusively as a vintage Champagne, with each release interpreting the character of a single harvest. Louis Roederer Cristal similarly reflects an individual vintage through a distinctive blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne and Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque offer further interpretations of the prestige cuvée, each closely connected to the style and history of its respective house.
Multi-Vintage Prestige Cuvées
Not every prestige cuvée belongs to a single year.
Krug Grande Cuvée is constructed from an extensive collection of wines spanning numerous vintages, with each numbered Édition representing a different blend. Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle follows its own multi-vintage philosophy, combining selected vintage years rather than relying on a single harvest.
These wines demonstrate one of the defining characteristics of prestige Champagne: vintage expression is only one route to complexity and longevity.
Blanc de Blancs & Singular Expressions
Some prestige cuvées are defined as much by their origin or grape variety as by their position within a producer's range.
Salon produces Blanc de Blancs exclusively from Chardonnay grown in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and releases its Champagne only from selected vintages. Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs and Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs provide distinctive expressions of Chardonnay through their respective house styles.
Other wines are even more specific. Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Françaises is produced from ungrafted Pinot Noir vines in Aÿ and remains one of the house's most limited releases.
Cellaring Prestige Champagne
Many prestige cuvées are made with long-term ageing in mind. Their acidity, structure and extended maturation before release can allow them to develop over many years under appropriate cellaring conditions.
With time, primary fruit can evolve towards more complex notes of toast, brioche, nuts, spice and dried fruit, while mature bottles can take on distinctly vinous characteristics.
Magnums and other large formats are also produced for selected prestige cuvées. Beyond their presence at the table, larger bottles can encourage slower development and are particularly sought after by collectors.
