The Steading is Torbreck's signature wine and is very much the heart and soul of the range. It's a wine that exemplifies their philosophy and beliefs. Comprised of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz vines that survived the worldwide phylloxera outbreak of the 1880s, and a century later, the vine-pull scheme in the Barossa in the 1980s. The Steading is the result of the serendipitous discovery of small remnant patches of withered ancient vines, some well over a century old, that have been carefully nurtured back to life. The protection of this old vine resource of the Barossa Valley is central to the Torbreck story and this wine, more than any other, is an indication of what is possible from these historic cultivars.
The Steading is a collection of 45 different sources of fruit from Barossa's sub-regions (Gomersal, Lyndoch, Greenock, and Moppa) including some from Torbreck's own vineyard estates as well as from growers on a share-farming basis. These 50% Grenache , 31% Shiraz, 19% Mataro are vinified separately and blended once their being individually quality assessed. After blending, it undergoes 20 months maturation on fine yeast lees in large 4500L French oak foudre vats. Natural malolactic. This results in generous and supple flavours combine with its silken texture in a wine that defines what is possible only in the Barossa.

Plum and fresh meaty aromas, spicy/earthy background, some grenache florals peeping through; medium-full bodied and a soft fleshy tannin texture. Very pleasing and drinks well already.
Torbreck was founded with the mission to become one of the world’s great wine brands, and since 1994, it has remained steadfast in its commitment to creating exceptional Rhône-style wines. The winery is located in the heart of Australia's famous Barossa Valley, which is renowned for its rich winemaking heritage and exceptional terroir. Torbreck works closely with multi-generational growers, whose families have been in the region for nearly two centuries. These growers are central to Torbreck’s winemaking philosophy, which focuses on working in partnership with the land to create wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the Barossa.
Torbreck’s commitment to minimal intervention winemaking ensures that the expression of each vineyard’s terroir is preserved, resulting in wines that are rich, structured, and capable of ageing gracefully. The winery’s dedication to quality is reflected in their choice of high-quality oak for maturation, as well as their careful fermentation techniques that allow the flavours to develop naturally. Torbreck’s wines, are a true reflection of the Barossa Valley’s potential to produce world-class, age-worthy wines.
The 2022 vintage was characterised by above average winter rains making up for a dry autumn, leading to full canopies and healthy vines for the harvest. A severe hail storm across some parts of the Valley in late October resulted in lower average yields. Slow ripening in the cooler conditions made for a gentle and drawn out vintage season, resulting in wines with higher natural acidity, rich colours and fine tannins. The wines from 2022 will reward those patient enough to cellar them away.
Deep crimson to dark plum core. Intensely lifted red and blue fruits dominate the aromas of mulberry, red plum, redcurrant and red cherry. Spices like sandalwood, cinnamon bark, and star anise also add complexity.
The palate is more robust than past vintages with denser plusher red fruits and a silky mouthfeel and added weight that glides across the tongue.
The firm tannins and driving acidity intertwine nicely against the lashings of red fruits and savoury complexity
