Perfumed elegance and cool-climate precision define the Pooley Cooinda Vale JRD Syrah 2023, a refined Tasmanian Syrah that pays tribute to the late John Rayner Downie, one of the key figures in the Pooley family legacy. Sourced from the Cooinda Vale vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, this wine reflects the region’s cool growing conditions, extended ripening season and ability to produce Syrah with spice, freshness and savoury complexity. The 2023 vintage delivered excellent fruit purity and balance, allowing the wine to achieve impressive concentration while retaining vibrancy and aromatic lift. Crafted with restraint and a focus on site expression, the wine captures a more Northern Rhône-inspired interpretation of Syrah.
In the glass the wine is intensely aromatic and finely detailed, revealing layers of blackberry, plum and dark cherry accented by cracked pepper, violets and smoked herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and elegantly structured, balancing dark fruit richness with savoury spice and vibrant acidity. Gentle oak maturation contributes texture and subtle complexity while preserving clarity and vineyard character. The Coal River Valley’s cool climate provides the wine with freshness and fine tannin structure, carrying the palate through a long and composed finish. The 2023 release combines finesse and depth beautifully, showing both immediate drinkability and excellent cellaring potential. This Syrah pairs exceptionally well with roast lamb, duck, chargrilled meats or wild mushroom dishes.

“The fruit for this syrah is from the estate-owned Cooinda Vale Vineyard in Campania. It's matured in French oak (20% new) for 10 months. Fragrant and spicy with aromas of dark cherries, wild raspberries, pepper, violets and a little iodine and graphite. Medium-bodied, it's silky, textured and long with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Very smart drinking.”
“A cooler expression of syrah with aromas of blackberries, cracked pepper, violets and dried herbs. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and vivid acidity. Elegant, savoury and finely detailed with a long mineral finish.”
Pooley Wines, established in 1985 by Denis and Margaret Pooley, is a family-owned vineyard that has grown to become one of Australia’s most acclaimed cool-climate wine producers. Situated in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, the winery has flourished under the stewardship of three generations, with John Pooley expanding the estate by adding the Butcher’s Hill Vineyard in 2003. Today, John’s daughter Anna Pooley, an award-winning winemaker, leads the production with an eye toward tradition and innovation. Her meticulous approach to winemaking honours the family’s legacy while elevating Pooley Wines to new heights of excellence. Recognised as the 2023 Winery of the Year by Halliday Wine Companion, Pooley’s commitment to quality and family values is evident in every bottle.
Pooley Wines’ philosophy is simple: to create wines that genuinely express the land, climate, and vintage from which they come. With a focus on sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the winemaking process, Pooley Wines allows the natural character of the fruit to shine through. The family’s dedication to crafting wines that balance elegance, complexity, and innovation is at the core of their approach. By embracing the rhythm of the vineyard and working with the challenges each vintage presents, Pooley Wines produces wines that are both distinctive and timeless, a true reflection of Tasmania’s unique terroir.
