Champagne Piper Heidsieck Rosé Sauvage was created by the Cellar Master Régis Camus and launched in 2005, Rosé Sauvage is the fruit of an original blend formed by a masterful alliance of red and white wines. The mission for Rosé Sauvage was to bring a very different and pioneering style of Champagne to the table, and this is evident the moment you pour the bottle. Coming from “Les Riceys” vineyards in the Aube department this Piper has a very distinct, stronger red hue to it than most other rosé varietals.
Comprised it of 50% Pinot Noir (including 15% red wines), 25% Meunier, 25% Chardonnay and 25% reserve wines with low dosage: 8 g/l adding texture to the wine. There's a decisive initial attack mellowing into notes of luscious red fruits and a sensational spiced and smoked finish, Rosé Sauvage is a delectably high-spirited champagne. Black berries, black currents and strawberries on a bed of roses; blood orange and tangerines enhance the flavour with bitter-sweetness with hints of saffron for good measure. Best served in big red wines glasses.
Maker:
Piper-Heidsieck's roots trace back to Florens-Louis Heidsieck, who created the original company of Heidsieck & Co to pursue his ambition of “creating a cuvée worthy of a queen”. He fulfilled his dream perhaps earlier than anyone could have expected: once Marie Antoinette had tasted his creation, she became the first Heidsieck & Co ambassador. Florens-Louis’ nephew, Christian Heidsieck joined the venture alongside Guillaume Piper and once Florens-Louis died in 1828, the duo decided to continue the adventure side by side, founding Champagne Piper-Heidsieck.
In 2011 both Charles Heidsieck and Piper-Heidsieck were bought by EPI Group headed by Christopher Descours, he has pumped significant finance into the companies allowing them to grow their vineyard holdings, grape purchasing and production. The brands are now growing their sales fast after many decades of decline. Today, production occurs alongside sister company Charles Heidsieck in an ultra-modern functional wine-making facility on the southern outskirts of Reims.
Vineyard:
Completely hand harvested from dry grown vineyards, estate and and partner wine growers. Their estate vineyard is certified with Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne and High Environmental Value level three. They meticulously maintain soil health through mechanical weeding under rows and encourage natural grass growth between vineyard rows. Emphasising vineyard health, they employ a zero herbicide approach to promote biodiversity, complemented by the planting of native hedge species that attract beneficial insects. Close proximity of beehives to the vineyards further enhances ecological balance. Additionally, flowered fallow fields not only enhance the beauty of the vineyards but also provide vital time for the soil to regenerate and replenish essential nutrients.
