Moss Wood Semillon 2023
From the outset, the team at Moss Wood are immensely proud of this wine and its quality. However, technically-speaking, it is the most challenging of the 43 Semillons they have produced. The growing season had its trials and tribulations and the damage to the Semillon throughout it all was so bad, they nearly didn’t pick it. There remained some sound fruit and they had to weigh up the difficulty and cost of the process, given the degree of care required in picking and sorting. It was tedious and time consuming to say the least.
Pale to medium straw hue, with green tints; bright condition. The nose has lifted fruit aromas and distinctly fragrant, more so than usual. It certainly shows traditional Semillon characters of fig, apple and lemon but has added dimensions of quince, pear and peach. There is a complexity of lanolin, mushroom and malt biscuits, although this sits in the background for the moment, behind a wall of fruit. The palate continues the fruit depth theme of the ’23 vintage, with bright fig, pear, granny smith apple and citrus flavours, combining with fresh acidity and full body to give length and generosity. The other feature of 2023 is well balanced tannins, giving the wine a firm but smooth finish.
