The Felton Road Block 6 Chardonnay 2023 is a striking expression of the Bannockburn subregion in Central Otago. Sourced from the high-altitude Block 6 vineyard, this Chardonnay showcases the vineyard’s unique terroir. Situated on a north-facing slope at an elevation of 282-300m, Block 6 benefits from the optimal sunlight exposure, which is balanced by increased wind exposure, resulting in fruit that ripens slowly and evenly. The higher elevation and unique microclimate impart a distinct freshness and depth to the wine.
This wine is a true reflection of the site, with the expressive Mendoza clone as the dominant variety, complemented by a small portion of Dijon clone 95. The wine is crafted with minimal intervention: whole bunch pressing, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and maturation in seasoned French oak (with only 6% new oak) for 17 months. The result is a wine of elegance, balance, and purity. It is a harmonious blend of vibrant stone fruit flavours, like peach and nectarine, with a clean, fresh finish that is both rich and lively. The wine’s purity and energy are a direct reflection of its terroir and meticulous winemaking practices, making it a quintessential representation of Felton Road's commitment to quality and sustainability.

Commencing with meticulous site selection and vineyard design in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture (BioGro and Demeter certified) ensures that our fruit arrives at the winery as pure as it can be, while our entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands off winemaking: gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, an avoidance of fining and filtration all help preserve the wine's expression of its terroir. The result is Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which accurately express the authenticity and complexity of our unique vineyards. Felton Road choses to apply Biodynamic Agriculture. This approach is suggested by the German philosopher, Rudolph Steiner, in the 1920’s: it the next step beyond conventional organics (which is a pre-requisite to Biodynamics) and starts, in essence, with a simple idea: If we view a farm as a single, symbiotic living organism, then the more vigorous and complex that organism is, the richer the growing medium it provides for everything within the farm. In other words, the goal of Biodynamics is to maximise the living energy within this system in order to make it self-sustaining and of the highest quality.
So to maximise the living energy within their soils, Felton Road makes Biodynamic composts which form the foundation of this growing regime. Further Biodynamic strategies are employed in their vineyards including planting cover crops and wild flowers within the vineyard itself. Beyond sustainability, Biodynamics also promotes guardianship of the land by maximising the biodiversity it supports. For instance the hillsides behind the vines are home to a herd of goats, which keep the briar at bay while supplying meat for the table. Within the vineyard, they keep a clutch of chickens that forage amongst the vines, repaying them with natural manure, and supplying the team with delicious, organic eggs. Idyllic stuff.
Felton Road’s philosophy is grounded in sustainability and a deep respect for the land. By embracing organic and biodynamic practices, the winery ensures that each vine thrives in harmony with its environment. Every decision, from canopy management to harvest timing, is made with the goal of expressing the true nature of the vineyard. With a hands-off winemaking approach, Felton Road uses indigenous yeasts, avoids fining and filtration, and allows the wines to evolve naturally. The result is wines that are rich in complexity, character, and authenticity, offering a true reflection of their unique Central Otago terroir.
The nose is an enticing blend of lemon zest, peach blossoms, and delicate elderflower, all underpinned by a subtle mineral character from the schist soils. There’s a refreshing citrus quality that invites further exploration.
The palate is broad and expansive with dominant flavours of nectarine and peach, balanced by a lively acidity that ensures freshness. The wine has a silky texture and a vibrant core of stone fruit with a hint of citrus and a delicate touch of floral notes.
The finish is long, clean, and mineral, with the wine’s structure and purity shining through. A bright, fresh acidity persists, leaving a precise, elegant aftertaste that lingers pleasantly on the palate.
