The wine shows a soft perfumed nose and continues to unfurl. The palate has sweetness, followed by mineral overtones enhanced by toasty oak, and firm flavours with a long and savoury finish. This is a gem of a wine, with ageing potential of five to eight years from most vintages.
The Farr Rising pinot vineyard was planted in 2001 using a large mixture of rootstocks, but only three clones—MV6, 114 and 115. It is a very exposed and hungry north-facing slope, consisting of grey sandy loam mixed with an ironstone pebble (buckshot) at the top. This leads into black volcanic soil over limestone at the bottom of the vineyard. The fruit is hand harvested, and then sorted in the vineyard. The fruit is fermented in an open-top fermenter, and an average 60 to 70 per cent of it is destemmed. The wine is placed in 20 to 30 per cent new Allier barrels by gravity. It is racked by gas after secondary fermentation, then again at 18 months to be bottled. Over time, the site has shown that it can certainly stand up to its bigger brothers.

The By Farr winery, established by Gary Farr in 1994, has become one of the most prestigious names in Australian winemaking. Situated in the Geelong region, specifically in the Moorabool Valley, the winery is known for its meticulous, hands-off approach to winemaking. With a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic practices, By Farr is recognised for producing wines that are a true expression of their terroir, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Gary Farr, a pioneer of Pinot Noir in the region, has passed down his expertise to his son, Nick Farr, who has now fully taken the reins of the winery. Under Nick’s leadership, By Farr continues to produce exceptional wines that have garnered critical acclaim both in Australia and internationally. Each bottle of By Farr wine reflects the family’s dedication to craftsmanship, sustainability, and the pursuit of perfection in every vintage.
The Farr estate is located in the Moorabool Valley between Geelong and Ballarat, 100km southwest of Melbourne. Gary and Robyn Farr purchased the original property in 1994 and the second section in 1998—this latter had been untouched for almost 40 years and consisted of dense boxthorn and noxious weeds. The final piece of the puzzle, which links the two blocks of land, was purchased by Nick and Cassie Farr in 2011, making a total of 130 acres. Nick and Gary Farr stand side by side, but aren’t afraid to go head-to-head when their opinions differ. Each generation has developed a distinctive winemaking style based on his individual experience and taste, and their respective lines - By Farr by Gary, and Farr Rising by Nick - have received critical acclaim both in Australia and overseas.
Turkish delight, cranberry and orange peel are held together with wafts of savoury charred oak.
Sweet and exotic fruits and spices. Loads of earth, spice, twigs and peppers.
Silky Tannins seem to linger endlessly. Tempting to enjoy in one go, but sit with it and appreciate it as it opens.

The Original wines where Chardonnay by Farr, Viognier by Farr, Shiraz by Farr and Pinot Noir by Farr now known as Sangreal by Farr. Overtime with the help of Cassie and Nick the vineyards have expand to adjoining neighbouring properties and eventually greater expression of the single site wines that we have today because of the pieces of dirt that we love to farm. The wines of By Farr are built around complexity, layered structure and undeniable length that places them in the highest regard by both consumers for their drinkability and age worthiness or critics around the world for their individuality.

(2018) Deepish red/purple colour with a floral, rose-petally bouquet that is aromatic and charming. A hint of potato peelings indicating stalk inclusion. The wine is medium-bodied and subtle, with notable acidity lending a trace of firmness to the palate. There's a touch of austerity. A delicious pinot, very enjoyable now, and as its best with food. - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, 95 Points.
