Elegant power and extraordinary site expression define this benchmark Premier Cru Burgundy from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most revered producers. The 2023 Domaine Armand Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques Premier Cru comes from the famed Clos St. Jacques vineyard, a site long regarded by collectors and critics alike as Grand Cru in all but name. Domaine Armand Rousseau’s holdings in Clos St. Jacques are among the most significant in the appellation, with old Pinot Noir vines planted on limestone-rich soils that consistently produce wines of depth, precision and remarkable longevity. Under the stewardship of Eric Rousseau, the domaine continues its restrained and terroir-focused philosophy, allowing the vineyard character to speak with purity and transparency. The 2023 vintage combines concentration with freshness, shaped by balanced ripening conditions that preserved aromatic lift and structural finesse.
In the glass the wine reveals layered aromas of wild strawberry, black cherry, violets and rose petals intertwined with subtle spice, crushed stone and earthy undertones. The palate is both silky and structured, delivering refined tannins wrapped around vibrant red and dark berry fruit. Despite its intensity, the wine remains poised and mineral-driven, with lively acidity carrying exceptional length and detail through the finish. Rousseau’s measured oak handling supports rather than dominates, enhancing texture while preserving clarity and vineyard definition. The finish is persistent, savoury and finely etched, hinting at the immense ageing potential for which Clos St. Jacques is celebrated. This is a deeply nuanced and cellar-worthy Burgundy that will evolve beautifully over the coming decades. It pairs superbly with duck, game birds, roasted mushrooms and refined French cuisine.

“The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is brilliant, bursting with aromas of sweet cherries, raspberries, rose petals and orange zest, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and layered palate that’s deep, vibrant and perfumed.”
“An ultra-elegant and exceptionally floral-suffused nose is comprised by notes of red raspberry, spice, sandalwood and discreet earth wisps. The gorgeously textured and beautifully refined medium weight flavors possess a beguiling sense of underlying tension while delivering superb persistence on the balanced and youthfully austere finale.”
“The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques 1er Cru has a very sensual bouquet with pure red cherry, crushed strawberry, sous-bois and light rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, beautifully balanced with exquisite precision and a persistent finish.”
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s greatest producers. Their wines inspire awe in the fine wine world, with each vintage highly sought after. The domaine was founded at the turn of the last century by its namesake Armand Rousseau, courtesy of a small inheritance of vineyards in Gevrey Chambertin followed by additional vineyards added through marriage. Today, the domaine produces some of the world's most prized wines. Their substantial holdings of Chambertin have accumulated through purchases which span nearly 90 years.
The estate boasts a rich history, initiated by the pioneering efforts of Armand Rousseau in the 1930s. Today, his grandson Eric and great-granddaughter Cyrielle are at the helm. The wines produced by this domaine are pale, finely structured and possess great elegance and stamina. The key to the Rousseau style is simple - old vines and sensible yields, with the wines gaining weight and complexity as they age. These wines are highly coveted by collectors and investors due to their limited annual production of just 65,000 bottles.
Domaine Armand Rousseau’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that great wine is born first and foremost in the vineyard. For generations, the Rousseau family has focused on preserving the pure identity of Burgundy’s finest terroirs through meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and minimal intervention in both farming and winemaking. The domaine places enormous importance on respecting the individuality of each climat, allowing every vineyard site to express its own character with clarity and authenticity. Traditional methods remain central to their approach, from careful hand-harvesting to patient élevage designed to support, rather than overshadow, the fruit. At the same time, the estate embraces precision and quiet evolution, adapting practices thoughtfully while maintaining the timeless style that has defined Rousseau wines for decades. Elegance, balance, transparency, and longevity are valued above power or excess, resulting in wines that reveal complexity gradually over time. Domaine Armand Rousseau also believes in stewardship, viewing themselves not simply as owners of historic vineyards, but as custodians responsible for protecting these exceptional sites for future generations. This philosophy of restraint, patience, and reverence for terroir is what has established the domaine as one of Burgundy’s most respected and enduring producers.
