Profound structure and haunting perfume define this monumental Grand Cru from one of Burgundy’s most revered domaines. The 2023 Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is sourced from old Pinot Noir vines rooted in the limestone-rich soils of Morey-Saint-Denis, where Clos de la Roche consistently produces wines of depth, mineral tension and aristocratic longevity. Domaine Armand Rousseau, under the stewardship of Eric Rousseau, continues its meticulous low-intervention philosophy, preserving the purity and site expression that have made the estate legendary among collectors and critics alike. The 2023 vintage captures both concentration and refinement, shaped by a growing season that delivered ripe fruit while retaining freshness and precision.
In the glass the wine shows layered aromas of dark cherry, wild plum, rose petals, spice and subtle earthy complexity, underscored by a distinct mineral drive. The palate is composed yet powerful, with finely woven tannins supporting vibrant red and dark berry fruit. Despite its density, the wine retains exceptional poise, lifted by energetic acidity and savoury detail that unfolds gradually with air. Rousseau’s restrained use of oak allows the vineyard character to remain at the forefront, giving the wine transparency and precision rather than overt richness. The finish is long, saline and intensely persistent, hinting at the remarkable ageing potential for which Clos de la Roche is celebrated. This is a deeply intellectual and cellar-worthy Burgundy that will reward patience over the coming decades. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck, game birds, mushroom dishes or refined French cuisine.

“The 2023 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru offers up aromas of plums, dark chocolate, orange zest, spices and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and sapid palate, with a sweet core of fruit, fine tannins and a mineral finish.”
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s greatest producers. Their wines inspire awe in the fine wine world, with each vintage highly sought after. The domaine was founded at the turn of the last century by its namesake Armand Rousseau, courtesy of a small inheritance of vineyards in Gevrey Chambertin followed by additional vineyards added through marriage. Today, the domaine produces some of the world's most prized wines. Their substantial holdings of Chambertin have accumulated through purchases which span nearly 90 years.
The estate boasts a rich history, initiated by the pioneering efforts of Armand Rousseau in the 1930s. Today, his grandson Eric and great-granddaughter Cyrielle are at the helm. The wines produced by this domaine are pale, finely structured and possess great elegance and stamina. The key to the Rousseau style is simple - old vines and sensible yields, with the wines gaining weight and complexity as they age. These wines are highly coveted by collectors and investors due to their limited annual production of just 65,000 bottles.
Domaine Armand Rousseau’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that great wine is born first and foremost in the vineyard. For generations, the Rousseau family has focused on preserving the pure identity of Burgundy’s finest terroirs through meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and minimal intervention in both farming and winemaking. The domaine places enormous importance on respecting the individuality of each climat, allowing every vineyard site to express its own character with clarity and authenticity. Traditional methods remain central to their approach, from careful hand-harvesting to patient élevage designed to support, rather than overshadow, the fruit. At the same time, the estate embraces precision and quiet evolution, adapting practices thoughtfully while maintaining the timeless style that has defined Rousseau wines for decades. Elegance, balance, transparency, and longevity are valued above power or excess, resulting in wines that reveal complexity gradually over time. Domaine Armand Rousseau also believes in stewardship, viewing themselves not simply as owners of historic vineyards, but as custodians responsible for protecting these exceptional sites for future generations. This philosophy of restraint, patience, and reverence for terroir is what has established the domaine as one of Burgundy’s most respected and enduring producers.
