Established and first planted in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus, the unirrigated vines at Yarra Yerings Yarra Valley vineyard produce elegant, complex and powerful wines. Approachable as young wines, they have the ability to develop in the bottle for many years. Yarra Yering is one of Australia’s most iconic wineries and quickly gained an international reputation for quality and individuality and for the next 35 years.
Dr Carrodus passed at home in September 2008 and the vineyard was subsequently sold to two businessman, both passionate Yarra Yering fans. They have continued to operate this iconic vineyard with the same philosophy. Yarra Yering’s proud tradition is being continued to great acclaim by current winemaker Sarah Crowe. Sarah, who was recently named James Halliday’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year, focuses on giving individual blocks and varieties the time and attention they deserve to continue making high-quality wine.
Original 1969 plantings of Shiraz with additional Shiraz planted across the 1990’s, Mataro & Viognier drawn from vines planted from 1984 to 1995. This fragrant style is approachable as a young wine but with some bottle maturation will evolve into a beautifully complex wine. This blend has a track record thus it will continue to evolve for a further 20+ years under suitable cellaring conditions should you want to cellar it for an extended period.
Very youthful purple colour with crimson at the core, the bouquet similarly youthful and bright, with spicy, meaty-charcuterie, confit cherry and gentle oak-char aromas of great character. Some floral grace notes emerge with time in the glass. The wine is full-bodied yet very elegant, with an effortlessness to its drive and intensity, without heaviness or excessive grip. Long, long carry. A lovely, graceful wine that drinks well already but will surely last a couple of decades. - Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 97 Points
