The Leeuwin Estate 2022 Chardonnay is a stunning expression of the Margaret River region, showcasing the exceptional quality of the 2022 vintage. Following a typically wet and windy spring in 2021, the season unfolded with periods of milder temperatures, which delayed shoot growth and flowering dates. However, the sunny conditions in early to mid-November allowed the vines to surge in growth, leading to a rapid flowering period. Warm conditions throughout January and February, complemented by the cooling influence of the sea breeze, allowed the fruit to ripen perfectly. Harvest commenced with Pinot Noir on February 4, followed by all white varieties by March 15.

This vintage is a masterful blend of precision and elegance. Hand-harvested fruit was destemmed, chilled, and combined with whole bunch pressed parcels, before being barrel fermented in new French oak barriques. The wine spent 11 months in barrels, where regular lees stirring enhanced the complexity and texture. The resulting wine is a true testament to Leeuwin Estate’s commitment to quality winemaking, with a harmonious balance of fresh fruit, vibrant acidity, and a touch of oak that will reward cellaring for years to come.

The 2022 season was warm and low-yielding, particularly for Chardonnay, and many of the wines produced in the region this season can be typified by their nuttiness and a distinct chamomile tea/white flower character. Here, the 2022 Art Series Chardonnay is showing both of those characters, neatly wedged into the authoritative profile of Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay. Today, for perhaps the first time ever in seeing these wines on release, I note that the oak is a key player in the drinking experience - as ever, seamlessly matched to the fruit and an important part of the wine's style and evident here today. There are toasted nuts, yellow fruits, exotic spices and an open fan of acidity/phenolics through the finish. This 2022 will prove to be a powerful and statuesque player in the wider footprint of Art Series Chardonnays. It's one to collect, but for drinking in the short/immediate term, decanting is recommended.

      — Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate, 97 Points

This seems, at least to me, to hark back to what might be called a more ‘old school’ classic LEAS style. And that will make many people very happy, no doubt. Pear, grapefruit, Teddy Bear biscuits, cedar, vanilla, clove and ginger oak laying it on pretty thick, though the fruit power is there to take it. It’s juicy, honey drizzled pear, citrus, a firm chalk dust grip, with a lively grapefruit cut of acidity, some lime and lime rind richness here too, with a bold and savoury finish of excellent length. It’s wine of power and presence, and some warmth, not immediately approachable, but very good.

      Leeuwin Estate

Leeuwin Estate stands as one of the premier wineries in Margaret River, Australia, renowned for producing wines that rank alongside the finest in the world. The estate was established in 1973 when Denis and Tricia Horgan, inspired by the mentorship of Napa Valley’s legendary winemaker Robert Mondavi, transformed their cattle farm into a vineyard. The first commercial vintage was released in 1979, and Leeuwin quickly garnered global recognition when its Art Series Chardonnay was highly recommended by Decanter Magazine in 1981.

Today, the estate is still owned and operated by the founding Horgan family, with three generations working alongside a dedicated team of viticulturists and winemakers. The focus remains on crafting site-expressive wines of exceptional quality, with a strong commitment to precision in every aspect of their production process. Leeuwin Estate’s signature Art Series wines—Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon—are regarded as some of Australia’s finest, achieving both critical acclaim and the highest accolades in the wine world.

      Tasting notes

      NOSE
      Pear, White Peach, Lemon Curd

A medley of pear, nectarine, white peach, and a delicate touch of lemon curd. It offers a layered complexity that is both aromatic and refined, setting the stage for the wine’s detailed palate.

      PALATE
      Nectarine, Aniseed, Cardamon

A delicate dance of pear and nectarine, with an intriguing thread of graphite and minerality. Subtle touches of sherbet, aniseed, and cardamom add depth, while gentle textures enrich the mid-palate, balanced by vibrant natural acidity.

      FINISH
      Black Tea, Talc, Chalk-Like Length

Long and refined, with chalk-like minerality, black tea, and talc. This wine combines precision with complexity, making it a beautiful expression of the Leeuwin Estate terroir.
