The fruit is sourced from the Cooinda Vale Vineyard at Campania in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Established in 1985, Cooinda Vale is a sheltered, north-east-facing site positioned approximately 80 to 100 metres above sea level. Its Syrah vines grow across shallow sandy clay loams over impervious clay, with areas of black cracking clay found toward the northern section of the vineyard. The site’s relatively shallow soils restrict deep root growth and access to water and nutrients, creating moderate vine stress that Pooley associates with delicacy and finesse in the resulting wines. The Coal River Valley’s maritime-influenced continental climate provides warm, sunny days, cool nights and an extended ripening period that supports gradual flavour and tannin development.
The 2024 J.R.D. Syrah is presented as a full-bodied red wine, combining aromatic lift with firm structure and measured freshness.
