Pinot Noir finds rare clarity in the limestone soils of Arbois. Domaine du Pélican’s Saint-Laurent Pinot Noir is drawn entirely from the organically farmed Clos Saint-Laurent, a high-altitude site layered with Bajocian limestone scree over grey marl. First made in 2018, this cuvée signals a turning point for the domaine, known for its precise Jura whites and now producing Pinot with equal restraint and drive.
The 2023 vintage shows the variety through a distinctly Jura lens: lifted, fine-edged, and mineral. No new oak is used. Ageing takes place in seasoned Burgundy barrels and large tuns, allowing the wine’s structure and site expression to come forward without distraction. It’s a style built on freshness and finesse, echoing the domaine’s philosophy of clarity and quiet complexity.

Domaine du Pélican was established in 2012 by Guillaume d’Angerville and François Duvivier, rooted in Montigny-lès-Arsures, a hillside village just north of Arbois, long regarded as the world capital of Trousseau. The domaine began with historic parcels once tended by the Chavanes family, including the revered Grand Curoulet, and has since expanded across 15 hectares in the Arbois appellation. Today, its vineyards hold all five of the Jura’s traditional varieties: Trousseau, Poulsard, Pinot Noir, Savagnin and Chardonnay.
The domaine’s story traces back to a single bottle, Stéphane Tissot’s Chardonnay Arbois Les Bruyères 2005, which left such a mark on Guillaume that he set out to find vineyards in the Jura. His search led him to biodynamically farmed plots at Château Chavanes, untouched parcels once tended by Jean-Marc Brignot, and later to vines acquired from the legendary Jacques Puffeney upon his retirement. With Duvivier guiding the day-to-day, Domaine du Pélican has quickly become a name of weight in the Jura, bringing a Burgundian eye while staying rooted in local sensibility.
Domaine du Pélican farms with a deep commitment to biodynamics, guided by lunar cycles and careful, low-intervention treatments that strengthen the life of the soils. The vineyards are ploughed, and when parcels are renewed, they are first rested under green fertilisers for three years to restore balance before replanting. Occasional applications of organic compost are used to encourage microbial vitality and maintain harmony in the earth.
The domaine’s philosophy reflects the geological kinship between Burgundy and Jura. Both regions share origins in the same ancient formations, though they diverged across the Saône rift. On the heights, the same limestones appear, while on the lower slopes lie the distinct grey and blue marls unique to Jura. It is this interplay of soils, climate and attentive stewardship that shapes the domaine’s wines, expressions that carry both a sense of place and the patient craft of their makers.
Strawberries, dried roses and a whiff of liquorice, underpinned by earthy spice and crushed herbs.
Delicate yet vibrant, with cranberry and wild strawberry flavours, fine tannins, and subtle herbal lift.
Airy and aromatic, fading slowly with notes of red tea, florals, and soft spice.
