The 2022 Hill of Roses Shiraz from Henschke in South Australia’s Eden Valley is presented here in 1.5L magnum, offering scale and poise for extended cellaring. Sourced from a single block within the Hill of Grace Vineyard, planted in 1989 and now over three decades of age, this 100% Shiraz is grown under organic and biodynamic practices. Known as the Post Office Block, the site overlooks the historic Parrot Hill and delivers a distinct expression of place. The wine is matured for 20 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads, maintaining detail and vineyard clarity.
Deep ruby with purple hues, the aromatics are lifted and precise, revealing boysenberry, blueberry and blackberry layered with pink and black peppercorn, five-spice, bay leaf, anise and sandalwood. The palate is bright and finely structured, showing raspberry, mulberry and black cherry interwoven with dark spice, graphite and cedar. A cool, extended season and reduced yields have shaped a wine of definition and balance, with fine acidity driving a long, seamless finish. In magnum, the format supports a slower evolution, making it well suited to cellaring or serving alongside roast duck or herb-crusted lamb.

What a beautiful, super elegant expression of Australian shiraz. What was once a nursery block on the Hill of Grace vineyard is now very much a wine of its own individual style defined by the most attractive florals, red fruits, ease of style and an underlying, deceptive power. Deep aromas of red fruits, plum, dark berries, lifted aromatic violet, fivespice, cassia bark, wood smoke and earth. Spices are integral to the Hill of Roses style and here they shine. Tannins are supple - deceptively so - because they are also structurally solid forming the basis for not only a wine of beauty but also substance.
The 2022 Hill of Roses Shiraz is eminently red-fruited, and this really aligns with my previous perceptions of this wine…each year the vines grow more, and the wine becomes darker, more powerful and more intense. However, it still retains its red-fruited heart throughout all the versions of climate and vintage. This is lighter, fresher and fluffier than the Hill of Grace Shiraz, and the tannins are “easier” somehow.
There is good integration throughout, and the nose does give notes of chocolate, mocha, coffee beans, blackberries and blueberries, aniseed, cloves, cassis and cocoa powder. This is a stunning Hill of Roses, with complexity already evident, great length and perfect balance through to silky, cashmere-like tannins. A seductive and alluring texture completes the picture. Pristine and taut, this will be a star over the next thirty years. Love it, and I expect the score to nudge up a touch further.
Henschke is one of Australia's most prestigious and historic wineries, with over 153 years and six generations of family ownership. Located in Keyneton, South Australia, within the renowned Eden Valley wine region, Henschke has built a legacy of crafting premium wines, including its iconic single-vineyard wines, Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone. Since 1862, the Henschke family has cultivated exceptional vineyards in the Eden Valley, Barossa Valley, and Adelaide Hills, with a focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation.
Stephen and Prue Henschke, the fifth-generation winemaker and viticulturist team, have led the winery since 1979, restoring native vegetation and adopting organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. The sixth generation, led by Johann Henschke, continues to honour the traditions of the past while embracing modern winemaking techniques to ensure Henschke remains a leader in fine wine production.
Henschke's commitment to sustainability and excellence has garnered numerous accolades, including the Wine Enthusiast's New World Winery of the Year (2021) and the Halliday Wine Companion's Winery of the Year. The winery has also been recognised with the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, highlighting its dedication to environmentally conscious practices.
Henschke’s winemaking philosophy is founded on the belief that the best wines are made in the vineyard. By embracing organic and biodynamic farming practices, the family ensures that their vineyards are cared for with a long-term view, prioritising the health of both the vines and the land. This respect for nature allows the true expression of the fruit to shine through, producing wines that are authentic, balanced, and reflective of their unique environments. Henschke’s approach to farming is not just about sustainability - it’s about building a legacy of responsibility for future generations.
This commitment to working with nature rather than against it is evident in every bottle of Henschke wine. The family’s attention to detail, combined with their unwavering focus on quality, has resulted in a portfolio of wines that are globally recognised for their excellence. Henschke’s wines are crafted with the intention of showcasing the distinct characteristics of their vineyards, with each vintage offering a true expression of place. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of their winemaking process, Henschke ensures that their wines will continue to be enjoyed for generations to come, leaving a lasting impact on the world of fine wine.
