Power, regional definition and brooding intensity distinguish the Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz 2024. Produced entirely from Shiraz grown around the township of Marananga, the wine captures the concentrated dark-fruit character associated with this celebrated western Barossa Valley district. Penfolds had long sourced Marananga fruit for several of its established wines before creating Bin 150 with the inaugural 2008 vintage. The label was conceived as a dedicated subregional expression, allowing the character of Marananga’s ancient soils and warm, dry growing environment to take centre stage. Its saturated colour, generous dark-fruit profile and ripe tannins are balanced through the distinctive Penfolds approach to maturation. French and American oak are traditionally combined to frame the fruit while retaining the wine’s unmistakable regional identity.
The 2024 release was matured for 16 months in French oak hogsheads, comprising 3% new and 61% seasoned oak, and American oak hogsheads, comprising 2% new and 34% seasoned oak. The unusually restrained proportion of new oak places greater emphasis on the purity, tension and structure of the Marananga fruit. Aromatically, the wine reveals mulberry, bilberry, blackberry and blackcurrant alongside plum, liquorice, dark chocolate and earthy savouriness. Notes of iodine, soy, black olive, graphite, violet and warming spice add further complexity. The palate is plush and concentrated, although its dense fruit remains tightly contained by prominent, multilayered tannins. Considerable freshness prevents the wine from becoming excessively heavy, while the oak supports rather than overwhelms its powerful structure. This is a youthful and commanding expression that will benefit from patient cellaring as its tannins soften and its aromatic detail becomes increasingly integrated.
