Many say the Pappy 15 is right in the “Goldilocks Zone” of proof and age. Where others are too young and lacking in finesse, or underproofed and even too old and oaky. The Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15 seems to be right in the sweet spot of drinkability. Expressly produced according to the exclusive Van Winkle family wheated-recipe and specially selected from barrels in the heart of the aging warehouses, this bourbon remained undisturbed for 15 years to age in deep-charred heavy oak untouched by human hands, unhurried by time.

This extraordinary bourbon certainly delivers. The higher proof enhances spicy notes—cinnamon intertwines with allspice and nutmeg. Velvety layers of butterscotch embrace the palate. But amidst the richness, and rather cleverly, there's a lovely floral scent behind every major note that elevates the experience. This bourbon is a copper, hazy colour. The palate has a rich, supple entry, followed by large, full-bodied flavours of caramel, peppery brown spices, and toffee. The finish is extreme, complex, and large with hints of wood and spice notes.

Initial sniffings find aromas of sweet corn dripping with butter, dark toffee and hazelnuts; later inhalations pick up notes of chocolate cake frosting, cocoa beans and vanilla. Palate entry is spicy, prickly and raisiny; at midpalate the taste features lead pencil, slate, black pepper, sautéed butter and deep-seared oak. Finishes ash-like, chewy and oily. American whiskey doesn't come any finer.

Fully matured at 15 years, as you would expect. Lovely array of flavors: candied fruit, cinnamon, nutmeg, gritty oak resins, vanilla fudge, and firm corn. Underlying notes of tobacco and polished leather add complexity and intrigue without dominating, kissed with a touch of honey. A remarkable value, considering its age and strength.

      Van Winkle

Van Winkle Bourbon Whiskey is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey produced by the Sazerac Company at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This production arrangement by Buffalo Trace Distillery was the result of a joint venture arrangement with the Van Winkle family that who established their brand in May 2002. This transition was seamless, with Buffalo Trace producing the Van Winkle bourbons, using Pappy’s exact recipe. This change allows Old Rip Van Winkle to maintain their exacting standards while producing more barrels for future enjoyment. And yet demand continues to outpace supply with each release. Only 7,000 cases of Old Rip Van Winkle and Pappy Van Winkle are produced for the world annually!

There have been four generations of Van Winkles working for the brand starting with the pioneer who established the Van Winkle juggernaut in the latter part of the 19th century; Julian P ‘Pappy’ Van Winkle Sr. Working as a salesman for the alcohol wholesaler W L Weller and Sons in Louisville, Kentucky and with the help of his friend, Alex Farnsley – acquired the business along with the Stitzel Distillery. They merged the two businesses to form the Stitzel-Weller Distillery producing such bourbons as Old Fitzgerald and W L Weller. Later, Pappy Van Winkle’s son Julian Jr managed the business following his father’s death in 1965 and created a new brand in the pre-Prohibition style, using whiskey stocks he had wisely kept by from the previous distillery. Julian Jr’s son Julian III ran the operation from 1981 following his father’s death and continued the brand. Then Julian Van Winkle III’s son Preston joined in 2001 moving all production to the Buffalo Trace Distillery.
