Benjamin Leroux Auxey-Duressess 2019
Leroux’s terrific Auxey-Duresses is drawn from three terroirs—Les Hautés, La Macabrée and Les Boutonniers—all abutting Meursault’s Les Vireuils Dessous and Les Meix Chavaux. The oldest vines date back to 1946. The land here is north-facing and affected by the cold air rolling down from the Hautes-Côtes—so very fresh terroir! The higher vineyards of the Côte perform brilliantly in warmer years, and this is a great example of this phenomena. This was vinified in 12-hectolitre casks, with a third of the blend raised for 15 months in 600-litre barrels.
The initial impression is one of ripe apricots touched with honey. The texture on the palate is creamy and lush, but not overly so, and there is enough freshness to balance the wine, making it a pleasant drink indeed. Fruit from Les Hautés, La Macabrée and Les Boutonniers, pressed as whole bunches and fermented in large casks (10% new). After about ten months, this was racked into tank where it will finish its maturation. - Decanter Magazine
