The fruit comes from Wendouree’s Eastern Vineyard Shiraz plantings established in 1919, giving the wine a direct connection to the estate’s remarkable collection of old vines. The 2023 vintage delivers a distinctly savoury and finely structured expression, combining dark berry fruit with dried herbs, spice, graphite and the regional character for which Wendouree is renowned. Although deeply flavoured, the wine sits around medium-bodied rather than relying on sheer weight or ripeness. Its 13% alcohol further reinforces the restrained, classical style of the vintage.

Blackberry, blackcurrant, dark plum and red berry characters form the core of the wine, accompanied by aniseed, tobacco, black olive, dried herbs and subtle cedar-like oak notes. The palate is concentrated yet controlled, with bright acidity giving freshness and definition to the dark fruit. Firm, savoury tannins provide the structure expected of young Wendouree, while notes of graphite, iron, grilled meat and spice add considerable complexity. The 2023 release is particularly notable for the balance between intensity and elegance, with its fruit and tannin held in precise proportion. Its long, savoury finish and substantial underlying structure make it a wine designed to develop slowly and reward extended cellaring.

Tasting Notes
NOSE
– Dark-fruited, savoury and highly aromatic
Blackberry, blackcurrant, dark plum and red cherry with dried herbs, aniseed, tobacco, gum leaf, graphite and subtle cedar spice.

PALATE
– Concentrated, structured and energetic
Dense black and red fruit framed by bright acidity, savoury herbs, black olive, mineral tones and firm, finely textured tannins.

FINISH
– Long, savoury and firmly composed
Persistent dark berries, saline mineral character, dried herbs, spice and iron-like tannins leave a long, structured conclusion.

Reviews & Accolades
“Deep and bright purple colour; blackberry, dark plum and smoky spicy savouriness on the nose. The palate is bold and bright with a sunburst of sweet ripe berry fruit; an utterly delicious wine with gorgeous flavour and fine, supple, filigree tannins in perfect harmony with the wine. A very elegant Clare shiraz.” — Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 97 Points

“The 2023 Shiraz is gravelly and intense—it stains the mouth with dark fruit flavor, which evolves into pomegranate, blood plum, mulberry, graphite, asphalt and ozone. This comes from the 1919 Eastern vineyard plantings, and it's a tremendously exciting wine, one that morphs and pivots over its evolution across the palate. Many drinkers will declare a preference for the Shiraz or the Cabernet wines; I have had enough great old bottles of each to know that they both remain sound investments, as they age gracefully over a long period of time in the cellar. The tannins through the finish of this wine are slightly firmer than I recall from last season's effort, but this may stand the wine in great stead in the future. Perhaps even a decant will help to give these the air they need to unwind. As I am tasting these bottles for review, all have been cracked and poured without delay or preparation.” — Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate, 96 Points

“Blackberry, blackcurrant, aniseed, tobacco and dried herbs, spice, gum leaf, some toasty cedar oak. It has concentrated black fruit, pulls savoury with black olive and grilled meat rolled in dried herbs, acidity has a cool and gently tangy quality, tannin is a little furry but also kind of ferrous, they are drying but sit well in the wine and give it a hard stamp of old school Wendouree authority, and the finish is savoury, saline, spicy and long. This needs a fair bit of time, but it’s a distinctive and very good wine.” — Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, 95 Points

Finer Details:
Brand - Wendouree
Style - Red Wine
Varietal - Shiraz
Country - Australia
State - South Australia
Region - Clare Valley
Vintage - 2023
ABV - 13%
Size - 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/9258/3217/files/c3252923-9bd6-4e5b-92c8-1a3e50730474.webp?v=1790309574
