The 2019 Unico Zelo Truffle Hound is the newest release from self-confessed wine nerds Brendan and Laura Carter and is everything we’ve come to expect from this dynamic duo and their Barbera/ Nebbiolo blend that has long been one of our favourites.

The fractured soil pictured on the label represents a dry riverbed, and the philosophy that started the Unico Zelo project- making wine that grows in Australian conditions, not wine that needs to be cultivated under the ever increasing harsh Australian sun. Planting over 35 varieties in the Riverland region, east of Barossa, and one of the warmest growing environments in Australia, Brendan and Laura left the vines to grow without any irrigation for two years, leaving the decision to mother nature as to what varieties they would use. Not surprisingly, the varieties that prospered were mainly Italian in origin and proven to be able to survive and thrive in warmer growing climates. These are the varieties that they now champion with Unico Zelo, or “Unique Zeal” from the Riverland and surrounding regions.

The Unico Zelo Truffle Hound 2019 vintage is a blend of Barbera and Nebbiolo from the Polish Hill River region in the Clare Valley. Brown herbs and a smokey note on the nose lead to a spicy, medium weighted and juicy palate with a refreshing and moorish finish. Seamless balance between fruit, oak, acid and tannin make this wine a thoroughly enjoyable match with pizza, pasta and a rainy night and there’s no doubt that it punches well above its price point, largely due to the fact that thousands of dollars of irrigation every year don’t need to be factored into price. A limited release from this vintage, this is a wine you don’t want to miss out on.
