Unlike Vintage Port, which develops primarily in bottle, this wine was matured in old wooden casks until the estate considered it ready for release. These traditional casks, known as cascos, have a capacity of approximately 640 litres and allow gradual oxidative development over many years. Only a portion of the available wine is bottled at each release, while the remaining 1997 stocks may continue ageing in cask for later bottlings. The grapes used for Quinta do Noval’s Colheita Ports originate from the estate vineyard in Pinhão, at the heart of the Douro Valley. Traditional production involves foot-treading and fermentation in the estate’s lagares before the wine begins its long maturation in wood. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 1997 Colheita combines the richness of a mature Tawny with the precision and distinctive personality of a single vintage. Its profile is comparatively focused and structured, showing less overt sweetness than many wood-aged Ports. Bright, pinpoint acidity gives the wine energy and prevents its concentration from becoming heavy. The palate is lithe yet powerful, with a finely defined line of spice extending through the centre. Walnut, dried fruit and coffee notes become increasingly prominent as the wine develops in the glass.
