This regional composition combines the concentration of Barossa Valley fruit with the depth of McLaren Vale and the structural definition associated with Coonawarra. The vintage was shaped by a cool and measured growing season that favoured precision, firm structure and long-term development. Near- to above-average winter rainfall replenished vineyard soils, while cool spring temperatures, wind and several late-October hail events reduced yields, particularly in Barossa Valley Shiraz vineyards. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA mild summer with few extreme heat events encouraged gradual ripening and helped retain freshness across the selected vineyard sites. Low yields and an extended ripening period produced small berries with concentrated flavours, firm tannins and controlled power. The wine was matured for 18 months in American oak hogsheads, all of which were new, following the established Grange maturation approach. Impenetrably dark in colour, it presents a powerful aromatic profile of black cherry, dark chocolate and Chinotto alongside soot, blacksmith’s anvil, boot polish, black pudding, marrow and savoury pan scrapings. The palate is saturated and sumptuous, combining remarkable volume and density with energy, definition and drive. Black cherry and dark chocolate return alongside walnut and polished leather-like nuances, while an expansive flow of resolved tannins carries the wine across the palate. Despite its concentration, the wine retains a sense of precision and freshness that distinguishes the cooler 2022 season. Penfolds recommends a peak drinking window from 2028 to 2075, reflecting the wine’s exceptional structure and capacity for prolonged development. Great integration to the oak, which comes across like powdered milk chocolate but which has settled extraordinarily well. I kept coming back to the tannin of this wine. It has grunt for certain but it’s the spread; swallowing here is like watching a storm roll through in reverse. It just keeps cascading on, impacting as it goes.
