Although the earliest releases were sourced exclusively from Kalimna, Bin 28 has evolved into a multi-regional and multi-vineyard expression of Australian Shiraz. The 2024 release brings together fruit from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Clare Valley and the Fleurieu, with the Barossa Valley continuing to play an important role in the blend. The growing season was generally warm and structured, following below-average winter rainfall and variable spring conditions across South Australia. An early-November heat event coincided with flowering in McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu, naturally reducing yields, while December rainfall refreshed the vines before ripening progressed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDry and warm conditions in the Barossa Valley contributed depth and concentration, while Padthaway’s cooler nights supported balance and Clare Valley’s elevation provided freshness and savoury definition. The wine was matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads, of which only 9% were new, allowing the richness of the fruit to remain central to the finished style. Deep crimson in colour, it opens with pipe tobacco, worn leather and black tea before revealing vanilla custard, milk chocolate, Black Forest cake, quince paste and dried fig. Savoury layers of juniper, black pudding, foie gras and cracked black pepper add complexity to the generous aromatic profile. The palate combines mulberry, boysenberry and raspberry coulis with caper, roasted-meat savouriness, vanilla anglaise and subtle root beer spice. Juicy acidity provides energy and definition, while firm cocoa-dusted tannins carry the wine through a long, controlled and confident finish.
