Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2016

Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2016

Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2016 hails from the famous Pinot Noir region of Marlborough, located on the northern edge of the south island. The 2016 season was one of the driest that the world renowned region has experienced since records began. A very cool start to the growing season created numerous frost events that made growth extremely challenging. Luckily, January to April were unseasonably warmer than typical years, which made for excellent ripening conditions.

On the nose, Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir is appealing aromatic, the notes of Morello cherry, bramble and dark chocolate dancing in the nostrils. Fine, silky tannins and juicy acidity provide an elegant structure, with complexity coming from gentle oak and smoky characteristics. This Pinot Noir would be best served with Prosciutto or a plate of cheese and nuts.

Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first five vineyards to venture into the Marlborough region. Founder David Hohnen was convinced of the regions potential to produce premium wine. Not long after, Marlborough became the leading wine region and well regarded world wide. The winery was named after a body of water famed Captain James Cook found during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. The sea had large amounts of sediment which gave it an opaque appearance and aptly named it 'Cloudy Bay'.
