With three vineyards located in Lenswood, Piccadilly, and Balhannah, Shaw + Smith is dedicated to growing the best possible grapes. With a deep appreciation for the potential of the Adelaide Hills, Shaw + Smith's love for Riesling has been a driving force behind their winemaking journey. They firmly believe that this region has the ability to produce exceptional Rieslings with remarkable ageing potential. It’s more grassy than tropical, with a bit of black texta and pyrazine early picked/unripe fruit character, but also plenty of passionfruit and cut melon. You have to dig beyond the just-bottled banana esters to get a complete view, but importantly, the acidity isn’t unripe; it’s just fresh. The intensity is next level, though, cutting a swathe through everything like the freshmaker 12% alcohol wine it is meant to be, and you come away feeling enlivened rather than attacked (which some young Sauv Blanc can be). Flavours of pear and quartz, nectarine and cedar, a gentle floral element, a subtle lactose note. It feels powerful, taut and refined at once. This is not a smack-you-in-the-eyes chardonnay and yet its quality and intensity are clear. As with many of the finest Australian chardonnays now, this will need a year or three from release to start showing its best self. - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, 7 April, 2022, 95 Points - On 2021 Vintage

The Finer Details
Style - White Wine
Varietal - Chardonnay
Country - Australia
Region - Adelaide Hills, South Australia
Vintage - 2022
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 13%

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/9258/3217/products/shaw--smith-m3-chardonnay_f6635611-3449-409c-a9d8-9cc2d989abef.png?v=1680559698
shaw-smith-lenswood-vineyard-chardonnay-2021
Shaw + Smith Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay 2021

Shaw + Smith, established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, is a winery that has become synonymous with excellence in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia. It exudes a restrained elegance, captivating Riesling lovers with its spine-tingling acidity and powerful extract. On the nose, enticing aromas of citrus zest, red apple skin and yuzu immediately captivate the senses. These vibrant and expressive flavours continue to unfold on the palate, creating a sensory journey that lingers for an age. The 2022 season for this Riesling started with cool temperatures during flowering, resulting in lower yields for early budding varieties. However, the season was mostly mild and dry, with timely rain ensuring the vines remained healthy. The harvest occurred later than usual, allowing the grapes to develop their full potential. Sourced from high and cool sites in Lenswood and Mt Torrens, this Riesling embodies the unique terroir of its origin. The cool climate and elevated sites contribute to the wine's exceptional character. In terms of vinification, the grapes for the Shaw + Smith Riesling 2022 were meticulously hand-picked. Half of the grapes underwent whole bunch pressing, while the other half were crushed and pressed. This separation allowed for distinct fermentation processes, highlighting the diverse qualities of the grapes. After fermentation, the wine was artfully blended and spent four months on lees before bottling. This extended contact with the lees adds complexity and depth to the final product. For those who seek aging potential, this Riesling will reward careful cellaring for up to 15 years. As time passes, the wine will evolve, revealing even greater depth and complexity.

Pale colour. In the glass, the wine reveals a vibrant core of red and dark berry fruit layered with savoury spice and subtle floral complexity.

Shaw + Smith’s meticulous approach to viticulture and gentle extraction in the winery preserves the delicacy of Pinot Noir while building depth and texture. Fermentation practices that include a portion of whole bunches, followed by maturation in French oak, lend structure and aromatic lift without overshadowing the fruit. The 2024 vintage reflects a cooler growing season, resulting in a wine of freshness, precision and finely etched detail. There is a seamless balance between bright acidity and supple tannins, giving the wine both immediate appeal and cellaring potential. Refined yet expressive, this Pinot Noir captures the distinctive character of Lenswood and is ideally suited to dishes such as duck, game birds or mushroom-based cuisine.

Tasting Notes
NOSE
– Perfumed and lifted
Aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry with hints of rose petal, spice and subtle earthy undertones.

PALATE
– Silky and structured
Medium-bodied with layers of red and dark berries, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity, supported by savoury spice and gentle oak.

FINISH
– Long and refined
A persistent finish with lingering red fruit, delicate spice and a subtle mineral edge.

Reviews & Accolades
“Precise, focused and concentrated aromas of red and black cherries, sandalwood, blood oranges and rose petals. The 2023 Shaw + Smith Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz is sourced from the warmer Balhannah site, where lower elevation and deeper soils provide a contrasting expression to the estate’s Lenswood vineyard. This site delivers fruit with greater depth and generosity, while still retaining the hallmark freshness and precision of the Adelaide Hills. In the glass, the wine shows a vibrant core of dark berries and plum, layered with black pepper, spice and subtle floral notes.

Shaw + Smith’s careful vineyard management and restrained winemaking approach ensure balance and clarity, with fermentation techniques designed to preserve aromatic lift and structure. Maturation in French oak adds complexity and texture without overshadowing the fruit, allowing the vineyard character to remain at the forefront. The 2023 vintage reflects a balanced growing season, resulting in a wine of both power and poise, supported by fine tannins and bright acidity. There is a savoury edge that runs through the palate, giving the wine depth and a sense of place.
