To add to these perennial sources, the 2017 takes in a little old-vines Jeunes Rois, in Brochon near the Fixin border. So, it is really a universal Gevrey. Each parcel is vinified separately before blending. There was minimal whole bunch used and the wine was raised in 228-litre barrels to add a little more flesh. Leroux’s aim was to channel the more elegant, floral side of Gevrey and this is on show here, with a terrifically perfumed, nuanced and textured wine with notes of peony and rose petal, grenadine and blackcurrant and plenty of that classic Gevrey ‘iron filings’ minerality. Both also lie on the Flagey side of the village, close to Clos Vougeot. The fruit from both of these vineyards was fermented entirely as whole bunches, while the harvest from a third parcel, Aux Raviolles, was entirely destemmed. Aux Raviolles lies at the opposite end of Vosne, under the northern 1er Crus of Nuits-Saint-Georges. From 2019 Leroux will be working with three hectares in Vosne and his understanding of the village is really starting to shine through. This is just a beautiful wine: fine, pure and juicy with a silky, seductive mouthfeel and good structure on the finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBen Leroux has produced a series of textbook wines in 2017, with clear differences between the terroirs and villages. But these are details; the most important thing to know is that it’s a superb wine for its level—deep and generous, remarkably rich for Bourgogne (with dark cherry, mocha, iodine notes) and a spicy, dark chocolate noted close.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"Punches above your average Bourgogne Rouge, is my first impression. Spicy and slightly earthy, raspberry and cherry, fine dusty tannin lends soft grip, fresh strawberry acidity (and flavour), slightly peppery but ripe throughout, with a finish of solid length. Excellent and approachable. This year Leroux retained around 20% whole bunches. It’s an exquisite release of this wine, if one that will benefit significantly from time in the cellar. The florals of rose and magnolia are there, as is the mulberry-like fruit and loads of brown spices. The tannins are certainly there too, demanding food or time. This vineyard is biodynamically certified and is perhaps Leroux’s most extreme and rocky terroir. While it lies at a high altitude (320-350 metres) and suffers bitterly cold winters, the vineyard picks up plenty of sun during the summer. The vines are up to 80 years old (with an average age of 50 years) and include some 20-year-old massale selection vines sourced from Comte Armand’s Clos des Epeneaux. The parcel in play lies close to the Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre and the vines are now 50 years old on average. Les Mitans is considered one of the most elegant expressions of Volnay, even though Leroux delivers a wine of real depth and intensity. The vineyard is mid-slope and exposed due east with a light, stony topsoil. A light touch of whole bunches (10%) adds a sappy note to the wine’s captivating floral and cherried core. Focused, fleshy fruit balanced by intense, ferrous minerality and plenty of ripe tannins. A superb Les Mitans that will only get better with time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eDense dark red, with a fine sense of concentration. The middle fills out beautifully, this was green-thinned and has the extra note of concentrated deep red fruit, and a tannin or two in support – but the fruit wins.
