Aromatically, this wine is thrilling: dusty cassis, bramble, raspberry pip, blood/iodine, sweet tobacco, raw cocoa, violet perfume, tarragon and fennel and a hint of hazelnut/nutmeg. In the mouth, the wine is savory, structural, spicy and chewy, with a ductile splay of tannin that moves across the palate and through the finish. The palate speaks of structure and shape, while the fruit is mostly on the nose at this early stage. This will evolve beautifully in bottle over time, and as the bottle I am tasting here today was bottled four weeks ago, no doubt your bottle will look more polished and sleek. Combining an unequalled harvest, cutting-edge winemaking technology, and 127 years of fine wine pedigree, Coleraine '21 stands alone - a wine of unique provenance even by Te Mata Estate's exacting standards. 2021 was an unmatched growing season; the earliest ever bud break on Te Mata Estate's vineyards led to the earliest ever harvest. This warm, dry, and historic vintage yielded an abundance of very small berries providing great concentration, and producing wines of exceptional purity, power, tension and persistence.

The deep crimson colour of Coleraine '21, edged in royal purple, is the first clue to this wine's exceptional character. Pure Hawke's Bay cabernet aromatics leap from the glass - wild blackberry, blackcurrant, thyme, and cedar, all interwoven with that signature Coleraine perfume of fresh roses. The palate precisely balances richness with vibrant energy; modern and varietally expressive, with cassis, raspberry, mocha, spice, and a distinctive minerality that is uniquely 2021. The fruit ripeness is so succulent, it cloaks those profound, chiselled tannins that carry the palate on endlessly. With perfume, power, finesse and length this is an absolute original. Coleraine '21 is "The One".

Coleraine '21 was hand harvested from separate plots within Te Mata's vineyards between 9 and 29 March 2021. Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a traditional warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to predominately new French oak barrels for 17 months' maturation. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The assemblage was made in December 2021 and the finished wine was bottled in December 2022. The final blend is 56% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot and 12% cabernet franc.

Very deep bright purple colour; the bouquet shows similar mulberry, blackcurrant and raspberry fruit aromas as the Awatea but the wine is more concentrated all-round and shows a little more oak (65% new). The grapes were hand-harvested between 5 and 14 March 2024 from individual vineyard parcels across the Havelock Hills and Bridge Pa Triangle subregions of Hawke’s Bay. On the palate, dark plum and cherry are joined by raspberry, white pepper, dried herbs and savoury spice, with oak contributing subtle cocoa and toasted nuances. Vibrant acidity keeps the wine energetic while fine, grainy tannins provide shape and persistence. The result is a poised and age-worthy Syrah with impressive aromatic complexity, silky flow and a long, savoury finish.

Tasting Notes
NOSE
– Floral, spicy and deeply perfumed
Violets, raspberry, dark cherry and plum with cinnamon, white pepper, dried herbs, toasted nuts and subtle cocoa.

PALATE
– Silky, vibrant and finely structured
Dark plum, cherry and raspberry flow across fine cashmere-like tannins, supported by fresh acidity, savoury herbs, spice and restrained French oak.

FINISH
– Long, savoury and refined
Persistent dark fruit, pepper, cocoa and dried herbal notes taper through fine-grained tannins into an elegant, lingering conclusion.

Reviews & Accolades

“Combining impressive fruit purity with savoury nuances, the wine shows dark cherry, raspberry, violet, cinnamon, white pepper, and toasted nut characters…” — Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 97 Points

“The 2023 Bullnose Syrah leads with crushed rocks and rose petals, pomegranate pearls, raspberry and a shading of tapenade.” — Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate, 94 Points

“Cinnamon oak sweetness with subtle floral notes and dried rosemary are balanced by game, dark spice, and cocoa nibs.” — Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review, 94 Points

Finer Details:
Brand - Te Mata
Style - Red Wine
Varietal - Shiraz
Country - New Zealand
Region - Hawke's Bay
Vintage - 2023
ABV - 13.5%
Size - 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/9258/3217/files/61b2d494-778f-41d6-b833-0c84be988a1d.webp?v=1789621861
