In 1957, Schubert was asked to show his efforts in Sydney to top management, invited wine identities and personal friends of the board. To his horror, the Grange experiment was universally disliked and Schubert was ordered to shut down the project. Max continued to craft his Grange vintages in secret, hiding three vintages '57, '58 and '59, in the depths of the cellars. Eventually, the Penfolds board ordered production of Grange to restart, just in time for the 1960 vintage. From then on, international acknowledgment and awards were bestowed on Grange, including the 1990 vintage of Grange, which was named Wine Spectator's Red Wine of the Year in 1995.

Maker:

Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. The Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 1986 reflects the enduring legacy of Max Schubert, whose pioneering vision established Grange as a benchmark for Australian fine wine. Sourced from carefully selected vineyards across South Australia, the wine embodies Penfolds’ multi-regional blending philosophy, crafted for longevity and depth. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world's great wines. In fact it’s beautiful. Showy vanillin, coffeed, toasty oak is the first impression – as you’d expect of a Grange – though it’s neither syrupy nor malty. The big surprise with this release though is that it doesn’t have the bigness of tannin that some (or most) Grange releases boast. Is this a bad thing? In this case, no – because the balance of this 2005 is brilliant. So too is the dark fruit power motoring through the finish. Grange is renowned for its ‘formula’, but this vintage changes the tune according to the wants of the season – less muscle, more finesse. A vote for the craft of the winemakers involved. It’s persistent and seductive and awash with flavours of sweet, dense, meaty, smoky, leathery blackberry and blackcurrant. Embracing the essence of tradition, family and passion, the winery is dedicated to crafting exceptional local wines, born from the meticulous selection of sun-kissed grapes thriving in the ideal cultivation conditions of their native vineyards. The legacy of viticulture within the Lavorata family traces back to Luigi, who in the mid-1800s, laid the foundation for this enduring passion. His son, Domenico, fervently carried forward his father's love for winemaking. In 1958, Vincenzo, the second of twelve children, imbued each bottle with meticulous care, sharing the fruits of his labour throughout Italy. The journey of wine production flourished under Ilario, Domenico's eleventh child, as he harmoniously intertwined the values of tradition and family with innovation and globalization. In a remarkably short span, their wines captivated foreign markets, particularly in Belgium and Germany. Today, the winery is fervently nurtured by Domenico, Ilario's son, an esteemed oenologist overseeing vineyards and production, along with Adele, tending to the administrative aspects, and Domenico and Danilo, sons of Vincenzo, entrusted with managing the commercial endeavours. The hand-harvested grapes undergo red vinification with cold fermentation and are subsequently refined for 6 months in barrique, followed by storage in stainless steel containers. On the palate, it delivers a dry, warm and soft experience, complemented by refreshing, velvety tannins, a full body, and harmonious balance, culminating in an intense, persistent, and elegant development.

The Finer Details
Style - Red Wine
Varietal - Nero D ’Avola
Country - Italy
Region - Sicily
Vintage - 2023
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 14%

Classic Valpolicella in style here consisting of the local grapes Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella & Molinara. The Shiraz provides structure, depth, and richness to the wine, while the Grenache contributes a soft, vibrant juiciness with minimal oak influence. Made of Shiraz and Grenache, this is exceptional old vine fruit sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub-district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Vine age is 50—80 year old Shiraz and 50—100 year old Grenache, pretty spectacular for an entry level red.

Old vine Barossa Grenache has a liveliness and structure that does not benefit from oak maturation—oak contact was thus minimised for the Grenache component to preserve the purity and animation of the fruit. After 30 years of winemaking, Colin Glaetzer established the family winery to create limited quantities of super premium Barossa Valley red wines. Today Colin's son Ben makes unique and elegant wines which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossan. All fruit for Glaetzer Wines is taken from a small sub district of the Northern Barossa Valley called Ebenezer which produces exceptional fruit from very old vines (30-130 years). The softness and elegance of Ebenezer fruit coupled with Ben Glaetzer's winemaking style results in generous wines with great depth of flavour that are also elegant, multilayered and finely balanced.

All fruit for Glaetzer Wines is taken from the small sub-region of the northern Barossa Valley, called Ebenezer. The ancient dry-grown vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer district are an important part of Australia’s winemaking heritage and a living link to traditional Barossa viticulture. Exceptional fruit comes from a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers, the backbone of Glaetzer wines. Most plants are trained to a standard single vine, with permanent arm, rod and spur. But the most exceptional fruit is sourced from 80-110 year old, non-grafted bush vines which are extremely low yielding.

The oldest vines bear only 0.5 to 1 tonne per acre. Younger vines produce 2.5 to 3 tonnes per acre. Most of the vineyards are dry-grown (non-irrigated) but some of the newer vines (propagated from original plantings) have supplementary drip irrigation to combat stress in drought years. The very old vines require minimal attention. Their deep root structure means they are self-sufficient and can adapt to climatic extremes.

The climate and soils of the Barossa Valley vary markedly from north to south. The warmer Ebenezer district has low rainfall and relative humidity which results in full, intensely-coloured wines. The softness, elegance and approachability of Ebenezer fruit has become the hallmark of the Glaetzer 'house style’. Ebenezer has a unique soil profile. The well-drained sandy clay loam over a solid limestone pan is perfect for growing Shiraz. The soil is 'mean' and encourages deep roots which helps produce hugely concentrated wines of great character.

Vineyard:

The Shiraz brings intensity, depth and body to the wine, and the Grenache adds a softness and vibrant juiciness.
