Jeffrey Grosset made his Piccadilly chardonnays and pinot noirs for many years from the Barratt vineyard, until it changed hands. He’s used The Deanery vineyard for this vintage, and while there’s less wine, the quality has certainly been maintained. The Deanery vineyard sits beneath Mt Lofty and adjacent to Cleland National Park and the Botanical Gardens, this has developed into a classic Piccadilly Valley vineyard.

Winemaking:
Barrel fermented exclusively in French oak barriques (40% new) for 10 months; only partial natural malolactic fermentation. There's ripe white peach, nectarine and honeydew melon flavours and, while the fruit is dominant, even expressive, there's an oak grip especially on the finish. More generous due in part to the inclusion of a new clone, it remains a pristine example of chardonnay grown in the ultra-cool Piccadilly Valley. The gently sloping site, selected and planted by Grosset in 1996, is comprised of silt and shallow shales over a thin crust of clay and gravel. This overlays a bed of blue slate, estimated to be around 500-million-years old. This is a ‘hard rock’ site. The vines struggle to draw nutrients from the soil, so the bunches and berries are small, and the fruit flavours lingering. Indeed, this vineyard exemplifies how old-rock profiles can contribute to a wine’s character. It is indeed an extreme example.

Jeffrey Grosset describes the fruitful challenges of the site, ‘a major challenge of this site is the variability in vigour from one vine to the next. This demands more intense labour input and hand-tending skill – varied to suit each vine – to achieve balanced vine growth and even fruit ripening.’ The solution is relatively close-planted vines, using three clones of riesling (two German and one rare local clone). Each Springvale bottling is crafted to reflect vineyard transparency and varietal focus rather than winemaker imprint. The 2025 vintage exemplifies that ethos, delivering a Riesling of precision, purity and assured longevity. It stands as a benchmark in the Watervale landscape and one of the most articulate expressions of Clare Valley Riesling today.

Tasting Notes
NOSE
– Citrus and slate
Aromas of lemon zest, grapefruit peel, white flowers, wet slate and a trace of green herbs.

PALATE
– Focused and linear
Lime and green apple drive the palate with chalky minerality and a sleek, dry structure that balances intensity with delicacy.

FINISH
– Long and taut
Persistent and bone-dry with a mineral edge, finishing with cleansing acidity and length that builds with each sip.

Reviews & Accolades
“You get flashy aromatics, mid-palate fruit flesh and intensity, and a penetrating drive of flavour through the finish. … Lime juice, grapefruit, citrus peel, a keen riverstone character and exquisite length.” — Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, 96 points, 2025

“Lemon-lime fruit as an underpinning, green apple crunch, a talc and brine-like mineral combination, some green herbs and a dash of tonic water, too. … Very classic in its feel; a class act.” — Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion, 96 points, 2025

“Intense and lifted fragrance of lime leaf and lemon blossom, with a creamy pastry overtone. … Concentrated, cleansing acidity, fruit intensity and persistence, with a hint of mid-palate richness that sets it apart.” — Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 95 points, 2025

Finer Details:
Style - White Wine
Varietal - Riesling
Country - Australia
Region - Clare Valley, South Australia
Vintage - 2025
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 12.3%
Other - Organic, Biodynamic, Vegan Friendly
Closure - Screw Cap

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/9258/3217/files/502b82b0-5326-4e08-837a-27158e29eb8c.png?v=1762069706
