Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds' multivineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

Its wealth of fine-boned tannins is, though, what sets this wine apart, and gives it the best long-term cellaring potential since the 1996 vintage Grange release. Schubert joined Penfolds as a messenger boy in 1931 and by 1948, he became Penfolds' first Chief Winemaker. In the latter part of 1950, Schubert was sent to Europe to investigate winemaking practices in Spain and Portugal. On a side trip to Bordeaux, Schubert was inspired and impressed by the French cellared-style wines and dreamed of making 'something different and lasting' of his own. Combining traditional Australian techniques, inspiration from Europe and precision winemaking practices developed at Penfolds, Schubert made his first experimental wine in 1951. In 1957, Schubert was asked to show his efforts in Sydney to top management, invited wine identities and personal friends of the board. To his horror, the Grange experiment was universally disliked and Schubert was ordered to shut down the project. Max continued to craft his Grange vintages in secret, hiding three vintages '57, '58 and '59, in the depths of the cellars. Eventually, the Penfolds board ordered production of Grange to restart, just in time for the 1960 vintage. From then on, international acknowledgment and awards were bestowed on Grange, including the 1990 vintage of Grange, which was named Wine Spectator's Red Wine of the Year in 1995. Today, Grange's reputation as one of the world's most celebrated wines continues to grow. On its 50th birthday in 2001, Grange was listed as a South Australian heritage icon, while the 2008 Grange vintage achieved a perfect score of 100 points by two of the world's most influential wine magazines. With every new generation of Penfolds winemakers, Max Schubert's remarkable vision is nurtured and strengthened.

The Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 2012 is a wine that truly embodies the reputation of Australia's most famous wine. With its deep color, this wine offers intense paneforte, dark chocolate and dark blackberry aromas, with lifted roasted chestnut, mocha, English-toffee aromas and notes of sweet tobacco, dried roses, shellac and frankincense. The wine is superbly concentrated, with wonderful presence, structure and density. It is plush in scale yet possessing lovely energy and structure, making it a truly transcendent and powerfully expressive Grange that harks back to Max Schubert's original blueprint. This wine is dense, expansive, rich and voluminous, with all elements in perfect symmetry. Its aromatic complexity, generosity and suppleness are reminiscent of the early 1960s, making it a wine that has to be in the pantheon of all-time great vintages. Unbelievably good to drink now, this wine is a great indication of its lasting quality, but it is recommended to leave it for a minimum of ten years if possible. Black olive, creosote, savoury, vanilla, chocolate and mocha aromas, touches of smoked smallgoods. The palate is full-bodied but it''s not a blockbuster. Soft and fleshy, smooth and supple, already showing a glimpse of the excitement and fascination that will follow in its maturity. The finish is all harmony, despite the flood of tannin: soft, savoury, powdery tannin. The components are all in great harmony so that no one feature stands out. The wine''s balance and seamlessness are impressive. The tannins have softened, and the oak integration is seamless. Pleasant fruit notes, earthy undertones, and hints of eucalyptus mingle harmoniously with the integrated wood and tannins. The wine offers a nice length and a well-rounded character. Its high viscosity is notable. The palate reveals explosive flavors of jammy black fruits such as black cherries and elderberries, complemented by touches of tart raspberries, tobacco, leather, mint, and meaty notes. There is also a distinct dark mineral nuance. Despite its full-bodied nature, the wine maintains impeccable balance, with the high alcohol content harmoniously concealed beneath the freshness and abundance of fruit. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 1986 is a truly exceptional vintage that showcases the best of Australian winemaking. The palate is rich and extravagant, with complex flavors of mocha, dark chocolate, dark berry and herb fruit, all complemented by dense and ripe tannins. The finish is chalky firm, but superbly long and flavorful. This wine is a great Grange that is still on the ascendancy, and it has rightfully earned its red star rating in the Penfolds Rewards of Patience, Sixth edition. As Australia's most famous wine, Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz is known for its superb fruit complexity and flavor richness. This wine is exquisitely perfumed and concentrated, combining the intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of Shiraz with the fragrance and complementary nuances of new, fine-grained American oak. In some years, a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon is added to enhance the aromatics and palate structure. Shiraz, growing on the fertile slopes in the Eden Valley region, is just one of those blessings.

Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz is the benchmark by which all other reds in Australia and overseas are often measured. Revealing a saturated purple color, it’s seemingly more forward and seductive than past great vintages, which I suspect is due to the incredible purity of fruit as well as the wine’s flawless balance than any change in winemaking or stylistic shifts. I also think the acidity is healthy, and the 2015 tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol, which is certainly in the sweet spot, if not tame, for beautifully ripe Syrah these days. A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in new American oak hogsheads, it offers an extraordinary perfume of sweet crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, camphor, Asian spices, liquorice, and wildflowers. This is followed by a full-bodied, powerful yet incredibly seamless and elegant Shiraz that has no hard edges, a big, dense mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Coming close to rivalling the 1986, which has always been a benchmark vintage of Grange for me, the 2015 offers a more polished, elegant, approachable style. To maintain the harmony of the land, a busy replanting schedule is in place, replacing up to 4 hectares of vines each year with new ones. In early September, the vineyards come alive with a whirlwind of activity from the break of dawn until noon. This dedicated effort guarantees the grapes' utmost freshness, the preservation of their delicate aromas and minimizes the risk of oxidation. It is through this meticulous process that AIX acquires its distinctive colour, delicate aromas, gentle acidity and impressive length. The symbol of the vines reaching towards the sky beautifully captures the enchantment of the land and the camaraderie of those who cherish it. It serves as a poignant reminder of the carefree days spent together under the warm sun and the abundance of shared meals, cherished moments and unforgettable memories that lie ahead. The vineyard is managed with low-input viticulture and the winemaking process is laissez-faire, allowing the wine to truly speak of its place. Wendouree wines are renowned for their exceptional quality and rich heritage, with the celebrated Wendouree Shiraz standing out as a true gem. This wine is derived from the estate's original 1893 plantings, believed to be genetic material from the original James Busby collection. Located on an easterly ridge towards the northern edge of the Clare Valley, the unirrigated Wendouree vineyards have shallow, meagre soils with red loam over limestone. The low-yielding old shiraz vines produce small berries with thick skins and a high seed content, resulting in a wine with exceptional depth and complexity. Despite its reputation and heritage, there are remarkably few older bottles of Wendouree wines in circulation. This can be attributed to the way the wines were sold until 1974, when they were sold in bulk and bottled and marketed by merchants, resulting in blended and single varietal shiraz wines being almost never seen. When presented with the chance to work with one of the most renowned vineyards in the Barossa Valley, they knew something extraordinary would be created. In 2003, Torbreck was approached by Malcolm and Joylene Seppelt, the fourth generation descendants of the Seppelt family, who entrusted their old Gnadenfrei vineyard in Marananga to Torbreck's winemakers. The vineyard, planted in 1958, spans five acres and is a treasure trove of traditional dry-grown vines sourced from original Barossa clones. Situated on the eastern side of a ridge between Seppeltsfield and Marananga appellations, the vineyard faces south and benefits from meticulous hand-tending, traditional farming methods and the expertise of a grower with a lifetime of experience in Western Barossa's unique dark clay loam and red friable clay soils. The meticulous care lavished upon these aged vines results in low yields of small, concentrated Shiraz berries that are the envy of winemakers throughout the Barossa Valley. When Torbreck first tasted the wine produced from this vineyard, it was clear that something truly exceptional had been created. Longingly, they watched as the wine was returned to the Seppelts, knowing that it was the best they had ever made. In 2005, Torbreck's unyielding belief in the potential of this vineyard led them to convince the Seppelts to sell the fruit, marking the birth of The Laird. The rich and powerful Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, is Penfolds first commercial release of a single cabernet-based wine, is linked to Max Schubert’s dream of making a great Australian red wine that could last at least 20 years. During the ‘50s and early ‘60s cabernet sauvignon was mostly used for blending, but Schubert’s breakthrough with the varietal as a stand-alone wine came in 1964 with inaugural vintage. Benjamin Leroux established a small negociant business in 2007. For fifteen years, this has been one of the most dynamic cellars on the Côte in terms of winemaking. It is also, atypically, 100% Barossa fruit. While it is not considered to be one of the great Granges, the 2000 exhibits outstanding potential, and is much more accessible than usual. One of the top wines I tasted from this vintage (which has had to take a back seat to subsequent years), its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet nose of blackberries, cherries, chocolate, and earth. With decent acidity, ripe, silky tannin, superb intensity, wonderful equilibrium, and a more open-knit, softer, accessible style than usual, it can be drunk now or cellared for 15-16 years. While this is no wimpy wine, it is an ideal example for readers who are unwilling to invest the patience required for the big, blockbuster Granges. - Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate # 161 (Oct 2005), 93 Points.

The Finer Details
Style - Red Wine
Varietal - Shiraz
Country - Australia
Region - Barossa Valley, South Australia
Vintage - 2000
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 14%

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/9258/3217/files/GrangeBottleNVBottle_323c8f9c-576b-4e38-bc48-4d52010b8eb9.jpg?v=1724817059
penfolds-bin-95-grange-shiraz-1988
Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 1988

Product Information:

The Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 1988 represents the pinnacle of Australian winemaking, showcasing the artistry and expertise of Penfolds.
