This is also raised entirely in tank—it’s not until the vieilles vignes level and above, that Moreau starts utilising (older) barrels. Moreau-Naudet Chablis 2017 spent 20 months on lees, considerably longer than the vast majority of Chablis. The fruit is also subject to a very gentle four-hour press, and the juice is fermented with natural yeasts (a rarity in Chablis). These traditional methods along with the hand harvesting, the quality of the terroir, the low yields (circa 35 hl/ha) and the full ripeness levels at which the fruit was harvested, helps to explain the fabulous texture, depth and quality that is on offer here. As always, a noticeable step up. There’s more lifted aromatics of ripe nectarine and yellow flowers, leading to a mouth-watering yet super seductive palate with pristine white peach kernel and salty deliciousness. To be specific, the final blend is drawn from four parcels of old vines planted 1955, 1956, 1957, 1968 in Les Cent Vignes, from a plot of 1930 vines in Les Tuvilains (from brown clay/marl soils), from Les Grèves, planted in 1968 on brown clay soils with gravel (grèze litée) and from Bas de Teurons in the centre of the appellation. While the total surface area of these plots is just over two hectares, the frost and hail affected vines only managed to produce four barrels, or the equivalent of 4.5 hl/ha. Croix vinified this cuvée with approximately 20% whole clusters, and the wine was bottled unfiltered. After his oenology studies, he worked at Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux, Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Louis Jadot in Beaune before making a name for himself as the régisseur (general manager) of Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard. Benjamin Leroux established a small negociant business in 2007. For fifteen years, this has been one of the most dynamic cellars on the Côte in terms of winemaking. Leroux works with some 50 appellations and every wine has its own bespoke treatment according to the conditions of each vintage.

This hails from the 50-year-old vines of Les Seuvrées (bordering Morey and contributing 50% of the blend); the northern limestone-rich La Justice; and old vines in Le Fourneau, in the centre of the appellation. To add to these perennial sources, the 2017 takes in a little old-vines Jeunes Rois, in Brochon near the Fixin border. So, it is really a universal Gevrey. Each parcel is vinified separately before blending. There was minimal whole bunch used and the wine was raised in 228-litre barrels to add a little more flesh. Leroux’s aim was to channel the more elegant, floral side of Gevrey and this is on show here, with a terrifically perfumed, nuanced and textured wine with notes of peony and rose petal, grenadine and blackcurrant and plenty of that classic Gevrey ‘iron filings’ minerality. Established by his father in the 1970s, Pierrick's family vineyard holdings have gradually expanded over time, resulting in the current size of around 33 hectares. After obtaining a degree in oenology from Beaune, Pierrick embarked on a journey to gain valuable experience by traveling the world and undertaking various internships. Armed with knowledge and a deep passion for winemaking, he returned home to take over the family vineyards and start producing his own wines. Pierrick's cellars, ingeniously built into the side of a hill in the village, allow for much of the winemaking process to be conducted by gravity ensuring gentle handling of the grapes. The vinification takes place traditionally in stainless steel tanks, while some of the Premier and Grand Cru wines undergo a small portion of aging in used barrels, allowing for a full malolactic fermentation. One of his oldest vineyard plots, Les Châtillons, planted in the early 1970s, sits just behind the hill of the Grand Crus and showcases the meticulous use of barrel aging, which adds complexity and depth to the cuvée. In 2016, Pierrick expanded his range by starting a small négoce operation, sourcing must from friends who predominantly farm on the left side of the river. This addition includes premier crus such as Beauroy, Beauregard and Vau de Vey, as well as the grand cru of Bougros. In 2019, Pierrick inherited 8 acres of vines from his father-in-law in the southern sector of Chablis, around the village of Courgis. This inheritance includes Petit Chablis, 5.5 acres of Chablis and just over half an acre of the premier cru Les Butteaux. Pierrick Laroche's dedication to his craft is evident in every bottle of wine he produces. With a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, his wines showcase the unique terroir of Chablis, captivating enthusiasts with their finesse, complexity and distinct character. As Pierrick continues to nurture and expand his vineyards, he upholds the family legacy while leaving his own mark on the world of Chablis winemaking. The name of Pierrick's Domaine, "hâtes" refers to an old agricultural unit of measure, similar to the English rod. It evokes the long and slender fields used for sowing, where the longer rows made plowing easier with fewer turns. The term "hâtes" was often used to describe such fields.

The Domaine des Hâtes Pierrick Laroche Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume L'Homme Mort 2018 is a captivating wine that exemplifies the excellence of Premier Cru Chablis. With vineyards spanning approximately 1.1 hectares in the renowned Fourchaume climat, this wine showcases the expertise and dedication of Pierrick Laroche. On the nose, this Chablis reveals an enticing bouquet of aromas, with delicate floral notes and hints of ripe orchard fruits. The palate is treated to a harmonious balance of flavors, where the vibrant acidity intertwines with layers of citrus, white peach and a touch of minerality. The wine's complexity is further enhanced by a subtle oak influence, adding depth and structure to the overall profile. The Domaine des Hâtes Pierrick Laroche Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume L'Homme Mort 2018 has garnered praise from critics, with its exceptional quality and expression of terroir. As a Premier Cru Chablis, this wine represents the unique characteristics of the Fourchaume climat. The limestone terroir, with its younger Portlandian limestone overlaying the Kimmeridgian, imparts a distinct character to the wine. Pierrick Laroche's conviction that this parcel of Petit Chablis should be classified as Chablis is evident in the wine's Chablis-like qualities and its proximity to AOC Chablis vines.

Pierrick Laroche owns just over a hectare in l’Homme Mort, with his vines thirty years of age. His 2018 version is a very fine example of this terroir, delivering a fine aromatic blend of pear, apple, flinty soil tones, a touch of straw and a topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is bright, deep and full-bodied, with an excellent core of fruit, fine transparency and grip, bright acids and a long, wide open and complex finish. This has the succulence of the 2018 vintage, coupled to fine mineral undertow and a good girdle of acidity. 2020-2040. - John Gilman, View from the Cellar.

The Finer Details

Style - White Wine
Varietal - Chardonnay
Country - France
Region - Chablis
Vintage - 2018
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 13%
Other - Organic

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/9258/3217/products/domaine_des_hates_pierrick_chablis_1er_cru_fourchaume_l_homme_mort_e1a99096-72a4-43fd-afd3-1fb5035b4d3a.png?v=1620311889
